Currently European governments are investing €22bn to €32bn a year in upgrading and expanding their electrical grid infrastructure. Even at this level of spending, Boston Consulting Group (BCG) say that there still will be a €800bn spending gap by 2030 and a €2.5 trillion gap by 2050, and conclude investment needs to be closer to €80bn annually. Of this spending 60% is required for distribution grids, 25% on transmission grids, and the rest for cross-border connections and storage. Already in the last two years investment has vastly increased, resulting in huge increases in sales for suppliers and manufacturers in these segments, with headcounts growing to meet the huge uptick in demand – as seen below. Some of the businesses shown below are expecting revenues to double in next 3-5 years! Whilst it's exciting, leadership teams must contend with challenges around organisational structure, operational complexity, quality control, sustainable planning, and crucially as previously mentioned in other posts, the core identity and culture of the business. I’m especially interested in how organisations are creating leadership teams to handle these pressures, and initiatives around developing a new generation of leaders to drive businesses forward. Over the coming weeks, I’ll be sharing conversations I’ve had with leading CHRO’s from Siemens Energy, Prysmian and Mersen about what their doing to prepare their senior leadership for an exciting future! What a phenomenal week the last one turned out to be!    You know how we all try to do our bit for the planet? Like unplugging our chargers or flipping the light switch off as we leave a room? Well, our team has taken those everyday energy-saving habits and scaled them big time. And this led to Ericsson’s eco-friendly innovation being honored with the Green Future Best Practice Award at the Deutsche Telekom Campus Fair 2024! 🌍🏆   The journey that brought us here was a team effort between our MELA SCR team and the local business team on the ground, particularly the Deutsche Telekom Key Account Manager, who all poured their expertise into crafting an award submission that shone a light on our collaborative spirit and innovation. Together, they crunched the numbers and showcased how Deutsche Telekom’s network in Germany is making leaps in capacity and energy performance, all while lowering its carbon footprint with our new energy-efficient radios. We're talking a massive 60.8 GWh energy saved annually, and a reduction of 4,290 tons of CO2e. This is what modernization with a conscience looks like, and it's helping DT sprint towards their ambitious Net Zero goal by 2040.   But this isn't just about celebrating a win. It's about setting the stage for what's next. The innovation we've highlighted here is ready to be rolled out to other markets, driving sustainability and business benefits far and wide. Do you wonder how the #majorinfrastructure tasks, the massive jobs like actually building wind turbines get done? I am lucky that at Intel Corporation and IBM I got to work with manufacturers and industrial clients so had some insight to the processes and it’s very different from the discussions that we have on a daily basis about using #renewableenergy or switching to more sustainable practices. But not so different if you design sell or manufacture any other products, even consumer products or clothing. Ultimately it’s a supply chain that involves design buying making and shipping. #Portsmouth is the nearest city to where I grew up, the home of the Navy. Stepped in battle historyHenry the eighth’s Portchester Castle still standing proud here, with HMS Victory, Nelson’s flagship under King George II from 1765, alongside the pillboxes that protected our shores in the 20th century. Instead, a different type of war, playing its part today in the battle against #climatechange. The mammoth task of moving a wind turbine blade the harbour skilled personnel and a very large low loading ship provide all that needed for this part of the journey. It’s likely this was manufactured in Denmark, a #nearshore supply chain, creating fewer emissions than if shipped from Asia. We gather as a team once a month here working often from Barclays Eagle Labs Innovation Connect offices or one of the social spaces hangouts, this was #Gunwharf Where The Cosy Club were happy to have us work from there as we grazed our way through the afternoon. We love getting together we love what we do, creating impact indices ways to help people turn thoughts of sustainability into action through #education #measuring and #innovation.

To accelerate the #EVtransition, we need to focus on #workforce. I’ve often heard it said that the EV market can only grow as fast as the charging network supporting it. Well, that charging network can only grow as quickly as the skilled workers available to operate it.
