Cannot stop thinking about the Detroit People's Food Co-op since I first learned about it. An except from the Facebook post that enlightened me: "What is a food coop? A food co-op is a grocery store that’s owned by its member/owners as opposed to a grocery store such as Kroger or Meijer which has corporate ownership or an independent grocery store owned by a family or individual. In a food co-op members have a role in shaping the store culture, operations, and product standards. Detroit People’s Food Co-op is democratically controlled by its member/owners. Each member/owner can only purchase one ownership share and has one vote. Before, the crewleaders and the fieldwalkers, they would say disgusting things to us and we just had to remain silent. But thanks to the Fair Food Program, we are ending these situations. These changes are now in many farms, but there are many more farms out there yet to be covered." -Reina (Farmworker) Since farmworkers first started organizing in Immokalee in 1993, the Coalition of Immokalee Workers has been fighting for the human rights of farmworkers and low wage workers everywhere. Over the last 30 years, through the CIW’s work, farmworkers have secured major gains— from significant wage increases and forced labor prevention, to enforceable COVID protocols and rigorous heat stress protections. In the process, farmworkers forged a model for guaranteeing human rights for low-wage workers across the globe, and collaborated with workers in multiple industries on five continents to expand that model. Those victories would not have been possible without the support of our incredibly generous network of allies and supporters: the Fair Food Nation. As the CIW’s 30-year anniversary wraps up and the Fair Food Program continues to rapidly expand Fair Food Program donors Travis McConnell, Cheryl Queen, Brent Probinsky, Mary P. Pautz, Heal the Planet Foundation, and an anonymous donor have issued a challenge to Fair Food Nation: If 300 individuals make a gift this week (regardless of the gift size) they would give $30,000 to the Fair Food Program. In 6 days, 270 Fair Food allies have become human rights defenders by giving to the Fair Food Program. 10 years ago, "Craft" was all about being different from big beer and clearly, the battle was in the Specialty segment which was "marginal". I mean.... was there a big guy brewing a Gose or an IPA really? In 2024 and going forward, "Craft" is first and foremost a mindset and brewing lagers, even American Light Lager is absolutely fine. And really that is going to change the game a lot as both will now fight in the central arena looking for consumer's attention. Here is Montucky. A beer from Montana, named after Montana backwood and rural side nickname. Tagline: Cold Snack. Giving 8% of profit to local charities. Great taste, cool design, priced between Busch and Bud. This year it made it in the 50 largest craft by volume and is available in 32 states. Oh and GALLO (Wine & Spirit) just made a strategic investment in Montucky, adding fuel to the fire! So we have more Wine & Spirit companies with a leg in the beer world, while the beer world is all about beyond beer. More fusions ahead!

Today in History with IP: On this day in 1856, Gail Borden Jr., an inventor and entrepreneur filed for a grant of patent for the process of creating a condensed milk. His invention was granted patent on August 19, 1856. The inspiration for condensed milk came to Borden during his voyage at sea, where he observed the spoilage of milk due to the lack of refrigeration. Determined to find a solution, Borden experimented with various techniques until he developed a process to evaporate water from milk and add sugar, resulting in a thick, sweetened product that could be stored for long periods without spoiling. Borden's invention of condensed milk had a profound impact on food preservation, distribution, and accessibility. It became a staple ingredient in households around the world and played a crucial role in feeding soldiers during wartime, as well as in providing nourishment to communities in remote areas. To this day, condensed milk remains a popular ingredient in a wide range of culinary creations, from desserts and beverages to savory dishes.
