There is no iconic episode to match the arrival of hmt Empire Windrush, the boat that brought a few hundred people from the West Indies in 1948, points out David Olusoga, a historian (himself a British-Nigerian). They lack the numbers of, say, British-Indians or the geographic spread of Poles. Instead, theirs is a prosaic story of modern migration. Airplanes bearing the parents of future chefs, footballers, politicians and musicians arrived in steady numbers throughout the 1980s and 1990s. The results, however, are extraordinary. An emphasis on education as a path to prosperity is hardly uncommon. What made the Nigerian influx different was that many arrivals were pretty middle-class to begin with. Kemi Badenoch, one of four remaining challengers for the Conservative Party leadership, is a case in point. Her father was a doctor, her mother a professor. In one sense, Ms Badenoch’s rise to the cabinet in the previous government is extraordinary. In another, it is becoming normal: another middle-class British-Nigerian was determined to enter Britain’s elite and succeeded." Do you like Italian food? How about tacos? Do you like phat Thai? What about Chinese food? Sushi? Tempura? Have you been out for a nice curry lately? Do you like French food? How about Irish dishes and Scottish whiskey? Do you enjoy spring rolls and pork bao? Had a nice stir fry lately? Do you like pizza? How about kabobs do you enjoy those? All of these and more come to us because of immigrants. In many cases the restaurant you eat these foods at are owned and staffed by immigrants. Some arrived via flight from oppression and sought shelter here. Others came because they married an American or were born here to immigrant parents. Some came through normal immigration channels and others crossed the border to seek asylum another way. All of these people brought their unique culture. Their food. Their language and their eagerness to follow the same American dream you all follow. They aren't mostly criminals - they are all people wanting a better life. The MAGA message of hate and racism would deny you the unique and valuable multiculturalism in food, language, music, art and personal outlook that makes America a unique and wonderful place to live. That is why they want to live here. Put your hate aside. No one sees who you vote for in the voting booth. Vote blue to ensure that we continue to attract and value people from all over the world. Because THAT my friends is what this country stands for and needs. not hate and divisiveness. unity and welcoming of other human beings.
