A shake-up of global supply chains is under way but trust in Singapore will ensure that there remains a place for the Republic in any new configurations that emerge, said Singapore’s Trade and Industry Minister Gan Kim Yong in a media interview. “The world is very different from when we started with the FTA 20 years ago. But trade will continue to be an important part of the global economy that will allow goods to be transferred and business to be done,” he said, smiting the doom scenario about trade that has gained traction today. “It may not be the same as 20 years ago; a lot more attention is being paid today to national security, to supply chain resilience,” said Mr Gan, in a reference to the heightened geopolitical rivalries and protectionist policies that have hurt global trade prospects. “As the hub, we want to be a key node in the supply chain. And if we are able to find a niche in it, then we can play to our strength in being the trusted partner in the supply chains,” he said. Are you reducing risk, or are you just moving it around? Supply Chains are moving out of China and into Mexico, Vietnam and other places. The Wall Street Journal asks; "does this change represent more resilient supply chains? Or just more expensive, opaque and complex ones?" They even suggest some companies are just making their supply chains longer and that moving out of China has reduced the US's leverage during the next crisis. #CSCCSCM #risk #riskmanagement #globaleconomy #derisking #manufacturing #supplychain #logistics

Navigating the Storm: How Singapore's Port Congestion and Global Trade Dynamics are Shaping the Future of Supply Chains The global supply chain is facing unprecedented challenges as shipping delays in Singapore have more than doubled due to a shortage of ships, containers, and severe port congestion. This disruption, initially triggered by recent tariffs imposed by the U.S. on Chinese goods, has led to a surge in container prices and extended shipping times. As Chinese exporters rush to circumvent impending trade restrictions, Singapore's ports are overwhelmed, with the average wait time for docking extending from one to two days to a staggering seven days. This bottleneck is causing ripple effects across various industries, from automotive to electronics, as manufacturers struggle to secure timely shipments of essential goods. Analysts predict this situation could persist for months, exacerbating inflation and driving up the cost of goods globally. As we brace for higher transport and commodity prices, businesses must strategize to navigate these turbulent times and mitigate the impact on their supply chains.
