Ever wondered how closely your genes align with those of your favourite athlete? 🔬 Well back in 2016, San Francisco 49ers football fans did, willingly handing over their DNA for that exact comparison. Reading through Marketing Brew this morning, this story peaked my interest. As a marketer with insights into the world of fandoms, it was clear that this innovative approach showcased the potential for groundbreaking fan engagement and spotlighting the exciting future of data-driven sports marketing. Here’s what I learnt: While not every marketer can tap into such intimate data as that from the San Francisco 49ers in 2016, it appears that access to sports data is obtainable yet largely untapped. However, Verizon’s Director of Sport Partnerships noted a reluctance among teams to share data, citing concerns about losing fans to rival teams. So it appears that a shift in perspective may be needed to achieve collective acceptance. I am excited to see how brands choose to leverage data this year as they continue to tailor campaigns for more personalised fan experiences.

A GREAT article highlighting the power of sports radio and the passion of it's listeners! "Hearing is more likely than seeing: Among sports fans, the research finds, 80% say they avoid TV ads, but only 20% skip radio ads. Audacy also says listeners are four times more likely to catch a brand’s message on sports radio than TV; and that 73% spend more time following a favorite team on sports audio than sports-related digital media. The best of both words. The research finds that brands that combine sports talk and live games get the best results. So-called “Superfans” don’t tune out when the game is over; they instead tune into sports talk throughout the week. Brands that only advertise in live games are missing 80% of sports fan action, Audacy says. Forty percent of “Superfans” actually prefer sports talk to live games."
