Ten days ago, I was fortunate to participate in the International Symposium on Redefining Bodies at Ruhr University Bochum. It was an amazing program with inspiring speakers and participants! I chose to focus on the physical embodiment of AI in literature because AI bodies are also excluded bodies. When discussing new technologies, the tendency is to emphasize questions of consciousness and awareness—from weak AI to strong AI, the Turing Test, or John Searle’s Chinese Room. We continue this epistemological debate by focusing on cognitive abilities, while bodies are mostly ignored. The emergence of Chat GPT and other AI in recent years only fuels the debate over human creativity. A very well written book, highly recommend to those who are interested in understanding the philosophy of AI. This book was written ahead of time before all the hype of AI. Penrose argues that consciousness, creativity, and higher-level intellectual abilities are based on non-algorithmic properties that cannot be simulated by computers. He proposes that these abilities rely on random fluctuations in physical systems, which AI systems lack. He goes further to claim that quantum entanglement is some Penrose’s key points: • Physicalism: Consciousness is a product of physical processes in the brain. • Non-algorithmic: Complex behavior like creativity and understanding cannot be reduced to algorithms. • Randomness: Quantum fluctuations contribute to the uniqueness and unpredictability of consciousness. This challenges the idea that AI systems can achieve genuine understanding, even if they can replicate human behavior or create illusions of understanding. Roger Penrose suggests that quantum entanglement may be the missing piece in AI research.
