It only took 36 hours to prove 22 million people wrong! It is March Madness! The greatest time for college basketball fans and those who love to see the unexpected happen. We are waiting to see who this year’s Cinderella will be, there is always one team that the “experts” say does not belong that makes it to the second weekend and beyond. ESPN had 22,114,647 million brackets filled out this year. After day one, only 1,800 of those brackets were perfect. Less than 1% picked all the winners. By the end of day two, there were zero perfect brackets left. This is the best sporting event around. Everyone gets a chance to prove it on the court. The small schools get to compete with the large schools. It is a win-or-go-home format. Have a bad game, you are done. One player gets hot and cannot miss a shot, their team advances. Legends are made over the course of this three-week tournament. My bracket was busted on day one. After the first game, it was no longer perfect. I am excited about the games happening the rest of the weekend and seeing the stories that we will be talking about all week. BTW, the women’s tournament has also started and it is going to be as good if not better than the men’s tournament. Did you fill out a bracket? Since beginning to work in the college sports industry, specifically NIL, I can't help but notice the similarities that are beginning to form between college sports and professional sports. That being said, there are still some glaring differences and changes that need to be made to give players the rights that they deserve. I created the graphic below to compare college football to the NFL as it stands now, almost 2.5 years after the NCAA enacted its Interim NIL policy. Is Charlie Baker's proposed "Make Up Your Own Rules & Please Don't Leave" NCAA Subdivision the answer for college football? No. It's a half-baked reaction to: a) the House v NCAA class action lawsuit; b) the likelihood that a court or regulatory agency will declare college athletes employees under federal labor law; and c) the desire of some of Power 4 schools to break away and form their own league. Big-time college football no longer fits into the NCAA's governance & business structure. It will break away at some point, perhaps with a major assist from private equity. The school's can license the name and rent out the faclities to private entities which run the football operation. Players are employees under a collective barganing agreement. People still come to games, cheer for their school, bet, and watch on TV/webstream. Love this from the Fairfield University women's hoops crew. Reminiscent of the ad posting Topgolf put out into the world after Tiger Woods' official split from Nike in terms of its simplicity and "old school" feel. It's a good reminder. PR doesn't have to be expensive. Creating buzz doesn't always mean an event. High production costs aren't necessarily a pre-requisite. <!-->--> Another new innovation will be introduced to college sports in the NIL era, this time in the form of a new in-season men’s college basketball tournament that will offer up to $2 million in NIL deals to the participating teams, according to a report by Front Office Sports on Friday.  According to On3, the teams that are in talks to participate in the tournament include Alabama, Duke, Florida Atlantic, Houston, Kansas, Oregon, Rutgers, San Diego State, St. John’s, Syracuse and Virginia. The eight-team tournament dubbed “Players Era” is slated for Thanksgiving weekend and will be held at MGM Arena in Las Vegas.  What’s more, is that every team included in the tournament will be guaranteed at least $1 million in NIL dollars for participating, per On3. Programs will distribute the cash at their own will, but it must be given to the current team.  Meanwhile, the winning team will be eligible to earn another $1 million. Another tournament known as the College Basketball invitational offered NIL agreements a year ago, with the winning school receiving $25,000, the runner-up receiving 10,000 and each team semifinals loser receiving $2,500.  [Want great stories delivered right to your inbox?
