A lot of people are talking about expanding the NCAA tournament field. A big reason college football is so popular is that every game of the season matters towards who competes for the championship. The easier you make it for teams to compete in March Madness, the less the regular season matters. I get that more games equal more revenue, but it would be nice to see college basketball look at an in-season tournament concept like the National Basketball Association (NBA). As it currently stands, the selection committee is comparing leagues based on non-conference play that occurs prior to a lot of teams rounding into their best form. If there were a series of in-season cross-conference tournaments in January, it might create the added revenue the schools are hoping for while also giving the selection committee a better view of who the strongest leagues and teams are when it comes time to select for March Madness. I’m sure the television companies wouldn’t mind the added viewers during the regular season either…

Post season in college football is losing its luster with bad teams making one of the many (many) bowl games. And with the number of players opting out after conference championships make it really hard for a team to compete after Thanksgiving. These basketball players have played 30+ games and racked up more frequent flier miles (I know, not really) than they probably would like. Let’s not make them play more and further risk injury. In season or post season.

Great idea Tim! More revenue for the networks and the added benefit of getting the right number of teams from the big conferences in the big dance in March. No more 5-bid disparity between the power 6 conferences like this year, where the SEC/Big 12 got 8 teams in and the Big East only got 3 in. Unless you have the additional data points with the January tournaments showing clear conference superiority by winning games out of conference against other power 6 teams later in the season! This is a super idea. Win win for everyone who loves college basketball!

Don’t do a thing to it ;)

Good idea Tim! Although the thought of taking any idea from the NBA makes me cringe. 😄
