Do you YOLO commits on main? Turns out a lot of postgres extensions don't use pull requests. I actually learned this after doing a quick look at pgvector and was informed that that project's maintainer sends commits without a PR and all context for the changes exist on the GitHub Issues. Makes sense. At OpenSauced we built product that provides insights around GitHub pull request, but we are now considering how we surface insights for projects with a high number of unstructured commits like explained above. I like the insight "YOLO commit percentage," but we will most likely call this "unstructured commits." Working in public FTW. #opensource #github #maintainer

GitHub No Longer Killing Node16 in June. After realizing that 50% of GitHub Actions would stop working on June 30th, it looks like GitHub is going to take a more pragmatic approach with its plan to break a non-trivial portion of the GitHub Actions ecosystem: they've revised their timeline for ending Node16 support in GHA. The new plan is to change the default runner from Node16 to Node20 on June 30th, 2024, while allowing users to opt out and continue using Node16 temporarily by setting an environment variable. GitHub will monitor Node16 usage and provide a timeline for its complete removal in early October, based on the volume of continued use. https://lnkd.in/gvjtdNgr

Cool breakdown of what happened historically, and what GitHub has done to refactor what used to be a single, enormous background job. https://lnkd.in/eqQNwBCe GitHub untangled its code-push process by swapping a monolithic background job for parallel tasks managed by Kafka, reducing latency and boosting reliability. Now, when you push code, various operations like pull request updates and webhook dispatches are handled separately, minimizing the risk of one hiccup taking down the whole show. The result? Faster, more dependable pushes and a healthier, happier GitHub.

Will Hopkins, Jacob Zwang and I continued our journey to rebuild Github in Cloudstate and Freestyle.sh. Today, we ended the cast with a lot working, and more not working. We can create, clone and push to repositories. Thats the good, here's the bad: - Once we push to a repo we can't pull to it - We're not clear that the pushes are committing the whole files (they may just be changesets or not enough) - Our repositories still don't have permissions or multi-user data models. But once we fix all of that — and a lot more — we will have a Github clone running fully in TypeScript.

Recently, I was happy to find a repository that helps convert GitHub codebases into text. I can use it to paste them into Claude, making it easier to understand projects quickly.  However, I was introduced to something even better: a project called SAGE. It takes a GitHub repo link and provides a chat interface, allowing direct interaction with the codebase from GitHub, including support for frameworks like Transformers, LangChain, and LlamaIndex.
