Our #HLS Faculty team have been working with the School of Veterinary Science to embed sessions across the first three years of the degree programme. The embedded sessions are now well established, whilst also being evaluated and improved year on year. Earlier this month, Dr. Laura Kennedy spent two hours with the third-year Veterinary Science students focusing on the importance of self-reflection, not only for completing assessments, but also for enhancing your employability and career progression. Self-reflection is something most of us will do instinctively, especially when working in a profession where we are required to practice care of people and/or animals, but it is not always easy to surface the specific skills we have developed as a result of our experiences. The session explored how to use self-reflection to help us to articulate the skills involved in both stress management and teamwork, as these are two of the Day One Competencies that Veterinary students are required to evidence in their assessments. During discussion, one student shared the invaluable insight that self-reflection can be really useful when they feel as though they are overthinking an experience they've had in practice as it is a way of producing a clear outcome, underlining what they've learned, that they can apply should the same situation arise in future. This helped us to recognise that self-reflection is not only a hugely valuable skill for completing assessments and job applications, but also in daily practice and life outside of work. #selfreflection #veterinaryscience #universityofliverpool #teamlivuni #schoolofveterinaryscience #dayonecompetencies #livunicareers University of Liverpool Jen Foden-James Jennifer Delaney Nuria Terron Canedo LV MSc PGCert(HE) PhD FHEA MRCVS

Our very own Alyssa Mages, BS, CVT shares why she does what she does! The ‘Share Why’ campaign is meant to highlight some of the personal experiences that have shaped their careers in the veterinary field, in order to capture some of the purpose and meaning behind the work that we do. We hope you enjoy this article from our very own Alyssa Mages, BS, CVT, Director of MentorVet Tech, as we hope to inspire the next generation of veterinary professionals to find deeper meaning in their work, to personally identify with similarities in joy & struggles found in the field, and to exemplify healthy self-care tips that allow us to remain working & passionate in the field! 1. Alyssa, why did you pursue a career in veterinary medicine? "I wanted to do and be more for animals - be the voice for the voiceless." 2. Why do you continue in this career? "I continue because it's no longer simply the patients who have no voice in our profession, the voices of our veterinary teams have now become lost. I want to ensure that every member of the veterinary team have the resources and support they need in order to be seen, heard and valued." 3. What motivates you to continue this work? "I have an incredible network of friends and family both within veterinary medicine and externally. My partner and children keep me grounded & focused on what matters most - the love and familial relationships in our lives. I also get outside as much as possible - walking, hiking, biking, paddleboarding (when it's warm), and make sure I get to the gym & pool to keep my body from creaking so much! It's not always go, go, go though - give me a good book, mug of tea, a blanket & my cat and I'm more than content." 4. What other words of encouragement would you like to provide to the veterinary community? "Remember, no one is "just" anything. Own your awesome!!!" Thank you for sharing with us your reasons why, Alyssa! We are so thankful for your energy and passion on our staff! #VeterinaryMentorship #VetMentor #VetStudent #VeterinaryCareers #VetLife #MentorshipProgram #FutureVet #VetCommunity #VetSchool #VetEducation #AnimalHealth #VetTech #VeterinaryMedicine #VetProfessional #VetAdvice #CareerDevelopment #MentorVet

I want to give a huge CONGRATULATIONS to all of the Class of 2024 DVM Graduates! As I reflect back on the 20 yrs since my graduation I would offer these words of advice: I was always happy being a veterinarian, but that happiness reached a depth of fulfillment and joy when I stopped looking at being a veterinarian as a job, but rather as an incredible opportunity. I decided to use the profession and not let it use me. To use it as a platform to help accomplish my wildest dreams. Rather than focus on the “what ifs” or obsessing on all the things that could go wrong, I decided to create my own path, set some lofty goals, and chase after them with a unwavering commitment. That alone changed the trajectory of my career. At the end of the day - this profession offers endless opportunities for happiness and success. Ask yourself one simple question, “ what does your happiness look like in 1, 5 , 10 yrs down the road?” Once you settle on that - go get it !!!! Congratulations!! You earned it. #createyourownpath #positivity #veterinarymedicine #graduation #mindset

Veterinarian | Project Management Professional | Entrepreneur | ~supporting change through action, connection, and trust~
I didn't even know that the job I do now was even a possibility. When I think back to my days in vet school, I wouldn't have imagined where I am right now. I actually didn't know the job I do now even existed. Certainly I didn't think it was for someone "like me." But, that's how careers go, especially in a field where we have SO much choice like #veterinary medicine. I LOVE how in my job I have such varied days and weeks, working on many projects and ideas. I LOVE that I impact lots of animals with my work, and support the people who do 1-on-1 medical care of animals. It is a bit like practice in that sometimes you're doing routine stuff, and other times you're putting out fires! So, here's what my week looked like this week (highlights only): ✅ Check in with my team at Vets Stay Go Diversify! and review of key metrics 🎑 Review use case scenarios for user experience testing being done on our website by University of Minnesota students 💻 Scope out website changes for a charity with a great firm 💻 Meet with potential collaborators with a charity 🐕 Dog walking in fantastic weather 💰 Scope 2 new projects with Natassia Lambrou, BBRM and Catherine Groves 🏊♂️ Kids to swimming lessons, ran into an old friend Aimee Rathbone 📰 Resume review for a client 👐 Coaching calls with clients for new business start ups! 📝 Write and submit a grant for a fantastic organization ✏ Draft another grant 😁 Prep for Diversify Veterinary Medicine Coalition board meeting (exciting plans ahead!) 🐴 Cleaned horse stalls (surprisingly relaxing... unlike cleaning my house) 🦍 Weekly Strategy with a fantastic company going to market very soon... more exciting times ahead in the horse industry. ✈ Booked trips to teach at University of Calgary in a few weeks. 👨🎓 Delivered a webinar for Dechra's fantastic student series... yes to increasing negotiation skills for all!! So, never doubt that there is a pathway out there for you that might just be perfect for you. There are SO many opportunities out there in vet med to make a difference. Maybe my path isn't for you, but I can almost guarantee there is one out there for you just waiting for you to grow into it. If you've read this far and have something that you do you didn't even know was a job, comment below!

Let's talk about MENTORSHIP. In a recent survey, 84% of recent veterinary grads* cited mentorship as the top reason for accepting their first job out of vet school. The transition from student to veterinarian, while thrilling, can also come with some stress as you navigate your new role. New grads know that a mentor can help with navigating those changes as well as provide a sounding board for difficult situations. At Vetcor, new grads have the built-in support they want. In addition to traditional in-practice mentorship, new grads also get to learn from clinicians at other practices in our network of 850+ hospitals during VetLife Days, and our Near-a-Peer Network connects you to other recent grads who are walking the same path from the classroom to practice. Is mentorship on the top of your list for your first job out of vet school? Let's talk about what Vetcor offers -- you might be surprised by our other amazing benefits, too! *2022 AVMA Graduating Senior Survey #vetmed #veterinarystudent #veterinaryrecruiter #jobsearch #veterinarycareers #veterinarymentorship
