This recognition comes as part of the annual Independent Schools of the Year awards, which saw hundreds of schools from across the country submit entries in 24 different categories. The Independent Schools of the Year awards celebrate and showcase the extraordinary achievements of independent schools, and 2024 has seen a remarkable response to the call for nominations. We are honoured to be among the distinguished schools recognised this year. The list of Finalists will be published on 9 September, and the winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in October. 🎉 Exciting to see Toledo Public Schools on the American Association of School Personnel Administrators 2024 recognition list for the William L. Hunter Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Award! This #AASPA award recognizes districts making outstanding contributions through the implementation of innovative and comprehensive teacher and leader development programs primarily focused on strategies designed to increase staff diversity. Research shows that urban and low-income schools encounter greater difficulty in recruiting qualified teachers (Ingersoll & May, 2016), principals (Carver-Thomas & Darling-Hammond, 2017), counselors (Miranda & Arredondo, 2020), school psychologists (Henderson et al., 2016), and paraprofessionals (Rockoff et al., 2011). One solution showing promise is providing current staff career advancement opportunities that result in increased responsibility, compensation, and impact. TPS refers to these programs as Grow Your Own (#GYO) and has 25 years of experience successfully targeting and filling traditionally hard-to-staff vacancies in high need schools. TPS has found that implementing GYO strategies, providing support for individuals to ensure they can attain a license, and developing comprehensive recruiting materials to attract candidates can help the district work towards a more diverse teacher and administrator workforce. Given the state of educator staffing shortages, these programs have become essential in filling vacancies. TPS has seven current and active programs built to develop and support individuals interested in teaching or leading in a TPS building. All of these innovative programs have worked to increase the number of teachers in classrooms and leaders in buildings! Though I’m not yet formally in post, I’m happy to share the GuildHE manifesto containing key recommendations for the next government. Our focus must remain on championing the diversity of our sector. It’s richness is derived from its wide variety of providers; some large, some medium-sized, some small; some more traditional, some very new; some providing on-campus, off-campus, blended learning or all 3; all delivering to towns, cities and regions across the devolved nations, enabling students of all ages to undertake lifelong learning that improves their lives, careers and experiences. There is no one-size fits all, and unless we think creatively, we risk losing the diversity that makes UK HE so attractive to both domestic and international students. Not only that, a less attractive, strong and robust system would weaken the UK’s soft power around the world at a time we need to be showing ourselves as deep and meaningful collaborative partners to tackle global challenges. I look forward to working with my GuildHE team and many of you in (and outwith) the sector to secure the strength and diversity of our sector!

As some of you may know or not, University of the Arts abruptly announced on Friday that they are shutting down the 150 year old institution. No warning. No disclosures. No notice that things were that bad financially. NOTHING. I am beyond gutted for the students, faculty, staff, alumni and the arts community. I have been involved on the Parents and Family Council for the last 4 years - with the last year serving as the Chair. The PFC members and myself broke our asses to support the school and we “find out” at the 11th hour - right before an article is going to be published. ⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️ To the Board, Kerry Walk and whomever else feels themselves responsible: I cannot articulate how deeply I hope you feel the most crushing, inescapable, sense of guilt and failure. You have failed us. Your soul job is to serve the institution, and the job of the institution was to serve the students. And you have failed at your job. Not only that, you have failed at failing – the middle states commission on higher education stated you have failed to make plans for a closure and plans for “teach out.” They are standards and expectations for failing universities to close with Grace. In your selfishness, in your desire to keep things hidden, you have failed to give the people you owe the most (staff, faculty, and students) any sort of grace.
