👏 Earlier this month, the Federal Government announced that from July 2025, it will support paid tertiary placements for #Teaching, #Nursing and #SocialWork students. This is a promising first step in addressing #PlacementPoverty and in turn, the #GenderPayGap. Students should not be penalised for pursuing a career by having to turn down paid work to complete unpaid placements. This is especially important in traditionally feminised industries such as #Education and #Healthcare, which are already less respected and lower paid compared to majority-men industries due to negative gender stereotypes. While there is still more work to be done to support our teachers, nurses and social workers in the beginning of their careers, this is a step in the right direction. #GenderEquality #WorkplaceSegregation #PayGap

Look at the 1st on the list!!! This is very factual! Do not undersell yourself when looking for a job. Know your worth whether it’s from experience and how quickly you learn. A lot of doctors hire medical assistants vs nurses to cut costs as we can do almost everything a nurse can under a doctors supervision. Granted, without the license of a nurse pay is lower but most places will try to start a certified MA at $12-$15 an hour? Seriously? One can work fast food for that! When considering your worth, know that you have student loans to pay back and the cost of living has greatly increased! If your employer doesn’t offer uniforms you need to think of all the other costs it takes to be a great MA. TEAS test is next in my list. Why not get paid to do, what you already do.

We're about the mum who just learned more about conflict management bringing up her kids than she ever did as a manager. We're about the 50-year-old who quit the C-Suite to save his health and now wants a job he can love without having to lead. We're about the autistic school leaver who would be your perfect purchase ledger clerk. They love inputting, checking, matching and finding anomalies. But they don't say much, especially in interviews. We're about the receptionist who's been with you for 12 years, loves the business but wants a new challenge. She knows more about your products than most and could chat to people on a lead list all day long. We're about the prison leaver who made one mistake, and wants a second chance. If you want to make a change to the way we view people's potential and what they can offer our companies, you need to look at CoActive Assessment®. It's about inclusion, a fair chance, diversity, evidence and PEOPLE. #coactiveassessment #skillsbasedhiring #selectionprocess #assessmenttools #candidateassessment #diversityequityandinclusion #hrbiscuit #fairness #neurodiversity

To my shame, I have been totally ignorant to the extent of unpaid work (#internships or #placements are the weasel words) now embedded in Australia. Let’s call it out for what it out for what it actually is – professionally managed slavery Unpaid placements paper over poor course delivery by #universities; business models built on free labour; or #professional 'associations' placing high barriers to entry. Doubt it? Here's a sample of ‘mandatory placements’ across four different universities/courses: - #Nursing approx 800 hours - Social work approx 1000 hours - Oral Health Assistant 38 hours pw for 24 weeks - #Midwifery approx 1000 hours Work experience is important for professional development – but half a year for no pay? That’s BS. The #UniversityAccord report released last week stated the impacts unequivocally: · Compulsory unpaid placements leave students "unable to support themselves while undertaking placement" leaving most at or below the poverty line · Some of the placement requirements for qualifications act as "barriers to entry" into a profession · Placement requirements limit entry into "critical industries" You would think that this type of exploitation would focus government minds. Don’t bet on it - Education Minister Jason Clare MP states "There's things in this report [the authors] want us to act on right now, there's other things that they want to debate in the community about. This is in that second category" Astonishingly, neither Mr Clare nor any of his 226 colleagues in the House of Reps or Senate have proposed a community debate on undertaking 1000 hours of unpaid placements in Parliament prior to taking office! While they work legislation that are solutions looking for problems (think #righttodisconnect or #samepaysamejob) under the #FairWorkAct we actually embed this as a form of #slavery...students completing vocational placements are not considered employees and not entitled to receive a wage or any entitlements. That’s why the government should stop fiddling around and pass legislation that requires: - higher education providers/employers introduce payment for mandatory unpaid placements - industry associations make reasonable contributions to the costs of providing placements if they benefit directly from "the pipeline of qualified people to fill jobs" or if they control the inflow of registrations - removal of student funding from universities for the period of an unpaid placement As individuals lets call out: - employers using unpaid placements (over and above education) as part of their business model. That’s #exploitation - professional associations creating barriers to entry (over and above standard setting). That’s #racketeering - universities for requiring unpaid placements as a pre-requisite to passing, while they simultaneously draw tax payer funding for that period. That’s #profiteering Disclosure: writer annually hosts student placements with housing/stipend provided
