What comes first: the housing or the jobs? Ryan Fecteau and I discuss the widespread lack of affordable housing options across different income levels, from high-earning individuals to those with low incomes. This is impacting employers' ability to recruit candidates, as people cannot find suitable housing, even for well-paying jobs. The issue also affects recent graduates from the University of Maine system, who are unable to stay in the area due to the lack of affordable housing options. As we step into another quarter, the latest statistics from March 2024 reveal a nuanced landscape of employment for our veterans (Veteran Unemployment Rates | U.S. Department of Labor (dol.gov)). With the veteran unemployment rate at 3.0%, slightly up from 2.8% the previous month and from 2.4% the previous year, it's evident there are challenges ahead. Yet, when we look closer, these numbers not only highlight areas of concern but also opportunities for growth and support. In comparison, the non-veteran unemployment rate stands at 3.8%, unchanged from the previous month and up from 3.5% the prior year. This gap, though marginal, underscores the resilience and the unique value veterans bring to our workforce. A deeper dive into the data reveals more about the landscape: The unemployment rate for women veterans stands at 3.4%, on par with their non-veteran counterparts. Male veterans experience a lower unemployment rate (2.9%) compared to male nonveterans (3.8%). Veterans with disabilities face a 5.3% unemployment rate, significantly lower than the 7.3% for nonveterans with disabilities. White Veterans 2.8% and White Nonveterans 3.2% Black Veterans 3.4% and Black Nonveterans 5.6% Asian Veterans 2.5% and Asian Nonveterans 3.0% Hispanic or Latino Veterans 3.3% and Hispanic or Latino Nonveterans 4.5% These figures not only shed light on the varied experiences of our veterans but also call us to action. At Veterans Bridge Home, we see these statistics as more than numbers—they are a call to bridge the gap between our veterans and meaningful employment. My team and I just published a new piece defining and measuring housing insecurity within Washington, DC, and the results are deeply distressing. Over 1 in 10 residents (12%) are housing insecure, experiencing a combination of unaffordability, inadequate housing, predicted instability, forced moves, or involuntary temporary status (i.e. staying with friends). But different groups had widely varying rates and types of housing insecurity: people in households with children, youth, Black or Hispanic residents, and residents in Wards 7 and 8 were disproportionately likely to experience housing insecurity, specifically unaffordability and inadequate housing. Meanwhile, white residents were disproportionately UNLIKELY to experience housing insecurity, and of those, most were staying with friends to reduce their cost of living or waiting to find a unit that fit their needs. https://lnkd.in/gpdEDDNU

Recovery residences are an approach to recovery/sobriety that is growing in popularity throughout the nation and here in West Virginia. The idea itself is to allow those going into recovery/sobriety the ability to live with and in support of one another. The collective is stronger than the individual. West Virginia currently has 110 certified recovery residence locations throughout the state. 20 of the state's 55 counties have at least one residence. When we initially debuted our Transitional Living in West Virginia map series, we received feedback asking us why we had not included recovery residences throughout the state. Although we have an answer to this question - recovery residences are not quite the same as the transitional living programs that we were attempting to document - we thought it a fair criticism nonetheless. In partnership with West Virginia's Alliance of Recovery Residences, we have added recovery residences to our map, albeit in its own separate category. Recovery residences are not transitional living programs in the sense that we reference them, but they are a valuable living resource for those transitioning into a life of recovery/sobriety. That new map is available here. It is the fifth button option in the light green color: https://lnkd.in/eQcG3xXb
