According to Vice Chair of its #ArtificialIntelligence caucus, Rep. Jay Obernolte, the US Congress must make #privacy regulations a top short-term priority as noted in this 1330 WFIN piece: https://bit.ly/3RQWkRk Why the sudden urgency? Because there's a need to ensure citizens are protected from the potential negatives and disruption #AI brings. Says Rep. Obernolte, “I think in the short term, the ability of AI to pierce through digital #DataPrivacy and to re-aggregate data that has supposedly been disaggregated and use it to create behavioral models that could be used to influence behavior, that’s very concerning, and that’s something that the government definitely needs to play a role in mitigating." One week on, I remain deeply inspired by the discussions held at #CPDP2024 regarding AI, privacy, and regulatory frameworks. Make sure to explore our insights!

I am pleased to see that many #dpas start to work on #ai, even more when they seem to promote #innovation and identify ways for the technology to develop in a way that doesn't conflict with #privacy. We need regulators' support in this area. The latest in the game here are the #ai fact sheets published by the CNIL - Commission Nationale de l'Informatique et des Libertés. You can read there (among many other things): "[...], the CNIL considers that the re-use of datasets, in particular publicly available data on the Internet, is possible to train AI systems, provided that the data has not been collected in a manifestly unlawful manner and that the purpose of re-use is compatible with the initial collection. In this regard, the CNIL considers that the provisions on research and innovation in the GDPR provide a regime for innovative AI actors who use third-party data. The development of AI systems is compatible with privacy issues." [...] But ... isn't this something that the European Data Protection Board and/or the upcoming #aiboard should be given a chance to work on to ensure that harmonization is achieved? The GDPR’s role in AI regulation highlights the importance of protecting individual rights. Ongoing debates about anonymization and the legitimacy of AI training datasets under GDPR remain hot topics. ▪ AI Deployment: Risk-Based Approaches Risk-based approaches to AI deployment remain key, leveraging know-how from data protection practices. This approach ensures that AI systems are developed and implemented responsibly. ▪ EU's Digital Framework: A Game Changer? The new digital regulations (AI Act, DSA, DMA, Data Act, etc.) aim to protect user rights while fostering innovation. However, the real-world impact of these ambitious frameworks remains to be seen. ▪ Teaming Up for Compliance Organizations and regulators must collaborate to align innovation with compliance and user rights. The #europeanunion's recent agreement on the #EUAIAct marks a significant milestone, setting the stage for its adoption in the coming months. As a European citizen, I am heartened to see the Act's strong emphasis on #privacy, #security, and #governance - values that are deeply ingrained in our ethos at Apheris. 🔎 Here are the main pillars of the Act: • The hallmark of the EU’s #AI Act is a risk-based framework, acknowledging the varied applications and impacts of AI across disparate sectors. For high-risk AI systems, there’s a mandatory fundamental rights impact assessment. This ensures that technology serves society respectfully and ethically, prioritizing human rights and dignity. • Foundational models, especially those requiring substantial computational power, are regulated. This measure adeptly addresses pressing concerns around data privacy and security while enhancing the transparency of AI operations. • The hefty fines for non-compliance are a clear indication of the seriousness with which this regulation is being approached. It's a bold statement about the importance of ethical AI practices in the modern world. Admittedly, there were moments of uncertainty about the effectiveness and scope of the EU AI Act. However, I am now embracing the momentum and effort that the European parliament has shown and am proud to live in a part of the world that not only aligns with my values but also actively legislates in accordance with them. It's time to lead by example and shape a future where AI is not just a technological marvel but a force for good, guided by principles that protect and elevate humanity.

🤔 Could AI-generated synthetic data reduce the privacy risks for EU policymaking and save the day? 📜 A very short paper that approaches the question on a EU policy level. ⤵ In short Regarding the EU's Data Policy, synthetic data could be an alternative to traditional data sources, but the quality of the data must be high. There are also issues with bias and accuracy in finding and using the best datasets. If done with good standards, data-driven policy-making can help with 📈 Improved forecasting 👩⚖️ Better decision-making 🌍 Policy development 📲 Helping SMEs to engage easily with data The EU also wants to develop universal standards for the 1️⃣ Creation 2️⃣ Management 3️⃣ Interpretation 4️⃣ Sharing of synthetic data to ensure the data is interoperable and can be used effectively. 🔜 Time will tell how the process will go, but this could be a good alternative with less privacy headaches when using data. #ai #syntheticdata #dataprivacy #eupolicy #eucommission #datapolicy

*** 𝗔𝗜 𝗔𝗰𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲 *** Today, the EU’s AI act comes into force. It is the first democratically established regulatory tool in the world to govern Artificial Intelligence. With this new piece of legislation, the role and responsibilities of the #EDPS expand. Our institution will also act as the “notified body” and “market surveillance authority” for “high-risk” AI systems that are developed and deployed by the EU institutions, bodies, offices and agencies. 🛡 Importantly the EU’s data protection laws, the GDPR and EUDPR, will continue to apply to any processing of personal data using AI.
