The project IN SITU: Place-based innovation of cultural and creative industries in non-urban areas is pleased to announce the Call for Papers (https://lnkd.in/d-e233fw) for its upcoming Conference "Horizons of Sustainability: the Power of Creative Innovation for Transformation of Rural and Non-urban Futures" which will take place in Šibenik (Croatia) from 25 to 27 September 2024. This event is led by the IN SITU partners Kultura Nova Foundation (https://lnkd.in/dKfdjpVk) and the Centre for Social Studies, University of Coimbra. It is supported by the European Union’s Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Programme (under Grant Agreement no. 101061747) and the Central European Initiative (https://ces.uc.pt/en/home) IN SITU is a four-year project that combines research and experimental actions to advance the innovation-related practices, capacities, and potentials of cultural and creative industries (CCIs) based in non-urban and rural areas of the EU. The project aims to better understand their forms, processes, and governance needs and to advance the ability of non-urban and rural CCIs to act as drivers of innovation, competitiveness, and sustainability. Ultimately, the aim is to contribute to a more informed and sustainable future for practitioners in cultural and creative industries based in non-urban and rural areas. This first IN SITU international conference will explore the transformative power of innovative approaches of cultural and creative agents in forging more equitable and sustainable communities beyond urban centres. In this event, we wish to inspire new ways of learning from one another. We aim to create an intimate environment that enables meaningful discussions and networking opportunities across research, culture-based creative practice, and planning and policy-making spheres. Therefore, within the conference, we will create different spaces and opportunities to foster exchange and dialogue with non-conventional approaches that fully place participants in the context of the place where the event is located. This also means that the number of presentations will be limited to allow for these other approaches. Nancy Duxbury

"Founding Director - Melbourne UNESCO City of Literature Office | International Relations, Stakeholder Management, & Cultural Leadership |
The first full day of the UCCN conference sees the annual tradition of as many Cities trying to talk about how good they are. Every City wants to reflect their success, highlighting their best practice and elevating their status to the world. At best it is uplifting and inspiring. At worst it is " long time caller, first time listener" It's a competitive and noisy space as Cities jockey for opportunity. Those on stage don't keep to time and those without a formal platform give out brochures and gifts. Melbourne has never presented. Rather we have worked people to people and platformed our international work via the UCCN website. Despite never seeking an opportunity Melbourne has been mentioned in every meeting I've attended. This year in the opening presentation by the UCCN directorate the Greenhouse was highlighted. About the day. The 2024 UCCN Annual Conference hosted by Braga aims to spotlight how creativity in cities empowers lively and sustainable urban life, influences future cities for next generations, and fosters the expression of cultural diversity. This XVI edition will strive to enable substantive dialogue concerning the diverse factors that shape cultural governance, bolster investment initiatives, and cultivate diversecross-sectoral collaborations and innovation. Additionally, it will draw attention to the importance of creative solutions and culture-based practices in propelling sustainable development, emphasizing culture’s global recognition as a public good.

In October 2023, I had the honour of presenting at the Asia Pacific Cities Summit & Mayors' Forum, held in my city of Brisbane. The summit, a melting pot of innovation and collaboration, revolved around the theme “Shaping cities for our future,” and I'm proud to have contributed to the conversation. My talk focused on how urban centres can harness the power of ever-increasing data points and AI to deliver services that are not just effective but also efficient, ultimately enhancing the lives of citizens. It was inspiring to be part of a forum that welcomed over 1,100 delegates from an unprecedented 171 cities, including 118 Mayors and Deputy Mayors, all committed to forging cities of sustainability, connection, and legacy. A few highlights that made the #2023APCS a landmark event: ⚡ Brisbane’s commitment to sustainability was underscored as it was awarded Gold Status under the UN-Habitat’s SDGs Cities Global Initiative, becoming the second city globally and the first in Australia to achieve this honour. ⚡ The Mayors’ Forum, a centrepiece for strategic urban governance discussions, led to the creation of the Mayors’ Accord, reflecting the collective vision and insights of city leaders. ⚡ The opportunity to explore Brisbane’s transformative projects firsthand, including the innovative development at Victoria Park (Barrambin). ⚡ The City Leaders’ Forum, in partnership with KPMG, not only facilitated networking but also laid the groundwork for a white paper focused on “Cities of Value,” setting a new precedent for collaborative urban problem-solving. Engaging with visionary leaders like Charles Montgomery, Andrew N. Liveris, Bo Seo, and Anthony Pratt, along with fellow delegates, was an enlightening experience. It reaffirmed my belief in the transformative power of communities when they come together to envision and build the cities of tomorrow. #2023APCS #UrbanInnovation #SustainableCities #DataDrivenGovernance #SmartCities #Brisbane

🌍 Join us at the #Aalborg2024, the 10th European Conference on Sustainable Cities & Towns in Aalborg, Denmark! I am thrilled to welcome urban sustainability leaders to Aalborg2024 (October 1-3, 2024). This conference is more than just a gathering—it's a catalyst for policy change, a platform for innovative thinking, and a testament to our commitment to sustainable urban development. We’re focusing on 1) Shared governance 2) Integrated finance 3) Cohesive transition. Here's why this event holds immense political and global significance: Policy Innovation: Local governments worldwide are pioneering policies that drive climate neutrality and sustainable development. This conference is our chance to learn from these successes and adapt them to our own contexts. Global Collaboration: With participants from across the globe, we have a unique opportunity to exchange knowledge and forge partnerships that transcend borders. Such collaboration is crucial in tackling climate change and urbanization challenges. Urban Resilience: Our discussions will focus on making cities more resilient to future challenges, whether they be climate-related, economic, or social. It’s about preparing our urban areas for whatever lies ahead. Inclusive Growth: Sustainable development must be equitable. Our goal is to ensure that our strategies benefit all citizens, particularly the most vulnerable. This is integral to achieving the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Economic Impact: Sustainable cities are thriving cities. By integrating sustainability into urban planning, we can drive economic growth, create jobs, and enhance the quality of life for all residents. Political Messaging: Following the Basque Declaration 2016 and the Mannheim Message 2020, shaping the Local Green Deal, the conference will see the launch of the Aalborg Conditions defining what local governments need from the national and European level for a successful transformation. I invite you all to join us in Aalborg to contribute to these crucial conversations. Together, we can shape the future of our cities and build a sustainable, resilient, and equitable world. Looking forward to seeing you there! https://lnkd.in/g9nRYCp4 #SustainableCities2024 #UrbanSustainability #ICLEI #ClimateAction #GlobalCollaboration #ResilientCities #InclusiveGrowth

I'm excited to share that our new paper, "Smart city and sustainability indicators: a bibliometric literature review," is now published in Discover Sustainability! This study looks at how important indicators are for planning and improving sustainable urban development. Here are some key points from our research: - A huge 288% increase in articles about smart city and sustainability indicators (SSCI) from 2015 to 2022. - China is leading in both publishing and citations, showing its strong commitment to sustainable development. - We identified three main clusters in SSCI, with circular economy indicators being the most common. - Our review shows how combining technology and sustainability can make cities better and protect the planet. This paper is the result of great teamwork. Big thanks to my co-authors Leonardo da Silva Tomadon, Dr. Edivando Vitor do Couto, Walter T. de Vries, and YARA MORETTO. Special congratulations to Leonardo da Silva Tomadon for his amazing work and leadership on this project. Your insights were key to our success.
