I first came across this quote during my Fashion Innovation course, which positioned fashion as a global system. Today, it hit home again during an industrial visit to Marsil Group, where I witnessed this connection in action—from a single thread to the global market. While embroidery design isn’t my usual focus, this visit offered insights into: • The complexities of scaling a high-caliber organization • Impeccable embroidery standards and techniques • Importance of resource management and teamwork • The challenges of material sustainability One pressing question remained: Where are the eco-friendly alternatives, and why haven’t they reached the ubiquity of plastics? The journey towards sustainable fashion lies in refining processes and scaling responsible materials. "The Next Gen to This Gen: Scaling Material Innovations in the Fashion Sector" report is a must-read. The comprehensive study is put together by Sustainabelle Advisory Services founded by Christine Goulay with the support of various industry experts, . The report, based on insights from 62 expert interviews and feedback from 157 stakeholders, offers a comprehensive overview of the roadblocks and advancements in the fashion industry, specifically focusing on material innovations. It discusses how "Next Gen" materials, which are renewable, have the potential to transform the industry by reducing dependence on finite resources like petroleum, minimizing the impact on land and water, and promoting circular production methods and design. The report also delves into challenges like off-take agreements and investments/commitments from brands, while sharing valuable case studies. PYRATEX® was honoured to be a part of this report and contribute to the interviews. On September 28th, I attended a World Hope Forum ANTI_FASHION webinar, curated by Lidewij Edelkoort and Philip Fimmano, hosted in collaboration with New York Textile Month. The World Hope Forum was launched on October 24, 2020 during Dutch Design Week. Its main goal is to create a holistic global platform for the exchange and expansion of knowledge and innovation, putting people before profits. During the webinar, stories were shared of people that lead by example — a slow fashion revolution that includes independent brands, folk favourites, outsider artists, artisan makers, textile farmers and style philosophers. Although new and innovative companies provide an optimistic outlook, I believe that change of the industry as a whole is too slow. Overconsumption, overproduction, child labor, high-carbon production and transportation methods continue to contribute to Fashion being the second largest polluting industry after Oil & Gas. Especially the larger Fashion companies fail to address sustainability issues consistently and continuously - due to today’s volatile macro economics, companies tend to loosen their strategies on DEI, Innovation and Digital Transformation and instead focus on Cost and Process Optimization. I love Fashion and I love Technology and I believe that with it we can drive change for good. However, for the entire fashion industry to change, we need real (culture) change. And real change also requires guts and new leadership. Even, or perhaps especially, in the current climate, I don’t think the industry is ready for that. It's very rare to be noted but sometimes reports can bring energy, positivity and urge for transformation at the same time. Our joint "Sustainable Raw Materials" report co-authored with Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and Textile Exchange that Sarah Needham, Senior Director of Engagement & Partnership at Textile Exchange, and I presented at Première Vision in Paris is bringing the 2 sides of the "Sustainability raw material transformation coin" together: - The environmental impact reduction proof points from shifting from conventional to sustainable materials - The economic opportunity from shifting from conventional to sustainable materials We also defined the 6 principles of our #MaterialsManifesto that should guide companies in their transformation. One of them really resonates with me: the #TripleWin case. For too long have we only looked at the profitability of the companies putting products on the market. It is more than time to actually ensure that Nature and Suppliers also win in this system. Companies, and all of us as consumers, have a responsibility to ensure the resilience and regeneration of Nature so it can continue to provide its ecosystemic services at a sustainable rate. Without Nature there is no material, no supplier, no companies, no products and no consumers.
