One of the things Mattox Plumbing has started this year is a quarterly electronic newsletter for our employees. As most of us do not work in the same location, it is a great way to communicate safety, information from the COO, Code Updates and other social event updates. One of the things we have started is an employee spot light. This quarter's employee spot light is Luke Mellor a 4th Year Apprentice. Luke's best advice to someone working in the plumbing industry was, "Don‘t be afraid to ask questions if you don’t know what you are doing. Take in all the information from your coworkers with their past experiences. Honesty is integrity don’t be afraid to admit when you have messed up”. Honest is Integrity. I'm back! (Well I was back Friday but NVM). I normally go early for my posts but thought that you could do with a break from the muggy, hot, mid afternoon weather and sign up for some training. We are really ramping up in applications for the Grad Installer training days. There are still spaces available but they won't hang around for long.... If you have desire to use high quality materials in your projects, you need to look into Grad and get onto one of our courses. As a reminder these are the 4th September in Surrey, 25th September in Worcestershire, and the 25th October in Cambridgeshire. It's unklikely we will be in these areas again in the near future so it may be a while before we are in the area again if you miss them. How to sign up? Our resident interviewer, Wayne Brogan, is at it again, interviewing Kim Coles and Labourer Forperson at one of our projects near Edmonton, Alberta. What is your trade? And what led you to this career? My husband and Wayne Crawley requested that I work with PCL Energy as a labourer foreperson, so I did. Are you interested in gaining a trade certification? Yes! I am currently applying for a Material Technician apprenticeship. What has a career in the trades done for you? My family has been able to live a more comfortable and less stressful life, enjoy more holidays, and spend more time with my family. That's why I do this; it's for me and my family. Do you have a mentor? Would you like to be a mentor? I don't have a mentor as of now, but I wouldn't mind mentoring anyone interested in the job. Okay, let's pivot to some more fun questions. What is your favourite thing right now? (song, food, podcast, activity)? I am remodelling a 1991 golf cart; I can't get enough of that project. Speaking of projects, is there a dream or favourite project to work on? Haha, yeah, I would like to finish my backyard projects. What is your favourite type of music, concert, or festival? The 80's and 90's. What did you want to be when you grew up? A marine biologist. Thanks again, Kim, for your time and hard work in helping us build our projects.

When we talk about a #Planforhousing of course we mean more homes to solve the housing crisis. But it's not JUST homes that housing builds. Housing builds skills, it builds opportunities and it builds communities. This is a great example of local people in the North West who've embarked on an apprenticeship and now turned that into a career, joining 1,500 staff who do finance, trades, lettings, housing, construction, communications, administration, HR, learning and skills, employability advice, welfare support, marketing, learning....a plan for housing is a plan for so many sectors.

As part of #ScotAppWeek24 we have been looking at the impact work taster events can have on capturing the imagination of students and young professionals by showcasing that the construction industry can provide a fun, dynamic, innovative and rewarding career for them. 👏🏻 A recent example of this saw more than 200 young adults from across Scotland attended a two-day work taster event. Organised by SCAPE Scotland its delivery partners and some of the UK’s leading construction and consultant companies, the ‘SCAPEing Out a World of Work Tasters’ event provided students with a hand-on experience of the industry. 👷🏾♂️ The event proved a great success with 74% of students now likely to consider a career in construction as well as an increase in knowledge on the various jobs and pathways available. What has also been encouraging to see, is the impact the event has continued to have in the days and months that followed with numerous school and site visits and career opportunities arranged as a direct result. 🙏🏽 Finally, only by true collaboration can the inherent challenges that exist within the construction industry be identified and challenged. This event proved just this, with SCAPE's delivery partners joining with some of the UK’s most influential construction and consultant firms, for the greater good. Career and technical education programs help establish a solid career path. Due to increasing student interest, there is a strong demand for more CTE teachers. We need to explore alternative pathways to simplify the process for individuals transitioning from industry to obtain teaching certification. For decades, American high-school students have been told that going to college is their best shot at a solid paycheck. But as the cost of college rises, skepticism has grown about that path. Hiring for roles that usually require a bachelor’s degree has fallen below 2019 rates in recent months, data from payroll provider ADP show. That’s prompting more young people to take skilled trade jobs, drawn by the prospect of well-paying careers that offer job security and don’t require taking on huge amounts of debt to be trained. Last year, the number of students enrolled in vocational-focused community colleges rose 16% to its highest level since the National Student Clearinghouse began tracking such data in 2018. Still, the work can be grueling, and it isn’t for everyone. Growing up as the son of an HVAC installer in a middle-class Philadelphia suburb, Louie Leonardo watched his father leave for work before dawn and would occasionally tag along to job sites. He thought he would have a cushier life if he got a college degree and pursued a career as a mechanical engineer. But after talking to friends and family who’d gone to college, he realized many of them didn’t earn nearly as much as his dad. “Talking to engineers, they were like, ‘I don’t even make $100,000,’” he recalls. Instead of applying to colleges, Leonardo became an HVAC apprentice. He attends eight hours of class at the union’s training center every other week, paid for by the union. He spends the rest of his time working for Herman Goldner Co., Inc. With overtime, he pulls in $70,000 a year. In 3½ more years, when Leonardo finishes his apprenticeship, he expects to earn $132,000 a year.
