Today is Poland Syndrome Awareness Day. Poland syndrome may occur with Moebius syndrome, although they are separate conditions. The cause of Poland syndrome is unknown, but in rare cases, is thought to be genetic in some individuals. Do you believe in Lacertus syndrome??? 🤔😱 I do! There is no doubt in my mind that it exists if you look for it. The combination of weakness FPL, FCR and FDP II with a positive scratch collapse test and tenderness over the median nerve just proximal to the Lacertus has been diagnostic for me and extremely sensitive. This new variation on the tests makes a lot of sense. On March 21, CoorDown, a group supporting people with Down Syndrome, is launching a campaign "Assume that I can".  Why March 21? 21/03 is World Down Syndrome Day (21 represents Trisomy 21, the genetic condition linked to Down Syndrome). Sciatica and piriformis syndrome can present similarly but differ in their underlying causes. Sciatica is typically caused by compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve from herniated spinal discs or bone spurs. Piriformis Syndrome, by contrast, involves irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve by the piriformis muscle in the buttocks. The piriformis muscle lies directly over the sciatic nerve, and if it spasms or becomes tight, it can compress the nerve, leading to pain, numbness, and tingling in the buttocks and down the leg. Unlike sciatica, piriformis syndrome does not necessarily involve spinal issues like herniated discs.

Today is World Down Syndrome Day. Per the United Nations, this year's theme is "End the Stereotypes." Did you know? When scientists look at our chromosomes under a microscope, they stain them with special dye to make them more visible. The dyed chromosomes look like striped socks! People with Down Syndrome have an extra third copy of the 21st chromosome, hence 3-21. Beckwith–Wiedemann spectrum (BWSp) is the most common genetic overgrowth syndrome, with an estimated prevalence of 1/10,340. The overall risk of malignancy among Beckwith–Wiedemann spectrum (BWSp) patients is estimated at 7.5%: 4% Wilms tumor, 1% hepatoblastoma (relative risk of 2,280), 0.5% rhabdomyosarcoma, 0.5% neuroblastoma, and ~1.3% all other tumors.
