With April being Autism Acceptance Month, it's not merely a time for awareness, but a celebration of the remarkable diversity within the autism community. Tish Bartlett, Executive Director of the Autism Society of Northwestern PA, reminds us that "Individuals with autism may approach life differently, but that’s precisely what makes them valuable assets to any team - and not to allow misconceptions or stereotypes to overshadow their potential. Instead, recognize the immense value they bring and create opportunities for them to thrive." If you are working in human resources, are a hiring manager, or supervisor - and would like to learn more about embracing neurodiversity in your workplace - this is a great program to equip your organization with tools to foster an environment where every individual's potential is valued - from interviewing and onboarding to mentoring and managing uniquely-abled talent. On the heels of Neurodiversity Inclusion Week and on World Autism Awareness Day, I'm moved by the posts from individuals sharing their experience of what it feels like to show up every day to workplaces designed for neurotypical brains. By reading these stories, I've gained insight into my own experience with ADHD and felt less alone. The courage and vulnerability in these stories are powerful, and they help those who might not feel able or safe to self-advocate. To turn that around, I'd love to help minimize the necessity of self-advocacy and ask organizations to take more responsibility. - What specific practices does your organization have in place to minimize the need to self-advocate and support neuro-inclusive spaces? - What do you wish your organization had in place or understood better? - What resources would you recommend to a company looking to improve here (resources like Mentra, The Pink Easel, and Neurodiverse Brains in the Workplace)? This week, we had a wonderful conversation with one of our amazing recruiters, Shantel Sansone, about her passion for working with Autism Care Partners and why she does what she does! Let's see what Shantel has to say! "Two questions I have gotten asked a lot lately is "why do you do what you do" or "why ACP?" Two questions that may scare some but to me, are truly the easiest to answer. I love ABA and I really love what ACP does with ABA. I've seen it in action, I've been trained by the most inspiring leaders, and I've grown into roles that I thought were unreachable. There was a point in time where I took a step back from ABA because I was overwhelmed and unsupported in the setting I was in. But when I came back into ABA and found ACP, I worked under an incredible mentor, who reignited my passion for ABA. I had new opportunities recommended to me and am continually recognized to this day, for the dedication behind my work. As I'm nearing my 5th year here, my "why" hasn't changed and I'm excited to see how much further I'll grow here over the next 5 years." Shantel, we are so grateful to have you at ACP. April is Autism Acceptance Month: a time to celebrate everyone's unique differences, work to foster inclusivity, and promote autism acceptance around the world. This time of the year can be a little confusing, however. Should it be Acceptance Month or Awareness Month, as it had been for many years? What's the difference? In a recent blog post on the Humanus website, I explain what separates awareness from acceptance, how the language we use to describe things and people affects our perceptions of them, and how a change in one word can make all the difference in the world. Since it’s the beginning of Neurodiversity Celebration Week, I thought I would share another good article that I think will be beneficial to all. This was an article I used for a research paper I did in my first semester at college, and it’s all about autism representation in the media. Autism Acceptance Month (AAM) begins today and you can expect to hear about workplace resources, acceptance, awareness and contributions of individuals with autism!
