Something is wrong – really wrong – with employee benefits. And I’m not the only one who thinks so. Our latest Nous research found that half (HALF!) of HR leaders admit their workplace benefits aren’t working. The problem? People don’t use them. Our data shows some of the most common reasons given by HR leaders for poor uptake of benefits were: ❌ Employees don’t seem interested 🙅♂️ Benefits don’t address what people really need 🤷♂️ Employees don’t know about them ❓ Lack of onboarding What this tells me is that businesses need to focus their attention – and their budgets – on benefits and support that actually move the needle when it comes to improving people’s lives. After all, employees increasingly expect their company to help them out with the struggles that daily life throws at them. And while rising prices remain the number one source of concern for UK employees, financial wellbeing is a crucial part of this. Physical and mental health provision, support with childcare, and flexible working are other areas where employees can really make a difference. To name just a couple, companies like Bubble and Selfspace do great work to materially improve employee wellbeing in these areas. Then – crucially – businesses need to carve out time for employees to engage with support on offer. This means using convening power to set aside time in the working day for staff to properly engage with benefits and see their upsides. Nous works with so many amazing companies that do this properly – and the impact is huge. Our mission at Nous for Business is to ensure we provide a genuinely effective way of making an impact on employees’ financial wellbeing.
