Sunak’s actions are predictably opportunistic & piecemeal, more often than not it has nothing to do with UK growth &/or productivity! The poorly conceived & executed Rwanda bill is a case in point. Many are still gobsmacked at his persistence incl. his Tory sycophants commitment to pull off something as unlawful and questionable? The same holds for the countries put under increased monitoring #FATF incl. #SouthAfrica (for all its sins is on the post Brexit list compiled for the 1st time independent of the EU’s lists prior) yet #Russia is still nowhere near the sin bin 👀 Smacks of a conflict of interest and demands a review (same as why sanctions got imposed so slow and delayed) yet with all the reports of Russian money laundered in Londongrad has still not made the UK post Brexit #AML list!? The word all winning leaders in the #UKElection have used today is trust. It's the currency they required in order to win, and now need to maintain to make and deliver difficult decisions and carry people with them. What we've seen is that when it is gone, nothing you can do or say makes a difference (The Tories). You're out. However, as many have commented, this is a less than ringing endorsement of Labour if you look at the national vote. In his behaviours, and the clarity with which he explains what he does, Sir Keir Starmer now surely knows he has the basis of trust - but is not yet fully trusted. That is a central task for him as it is for all leaders. The other word I was interested to hear from former Labour Comms Director Peter Mandelson this morning was narrative. I wrote a post yesterday about the lack of narrative in this empty election, and he made the point that Labour had won without fully establishing one. He said one of the key tasks is to now build a clear narrative in government. You may be amused to learn that the #British Parliament has a term limit until January 28th, 2025 leaving a likely parallel electoral experience next year. Winter elections in the #UK are as popular as a snowman in July, with Christmas campaigning hardly exciting voters. Therefore, brace yourself for a rare double whammy: the #UK and the #USA have been hosting general elections in the same year, a déjà vu since 1964. Remember October 15th, when Harold Wilson's Labour won by a hair's breadth after a 13-year-long Tory rule? On November 3rd, LBJ had a big win over Barry Goldwater. #Funfact: the current UK PM, Rishi Sunak, was not born until 16 years later… The worst part of the 2024 outlook is that where the UK has a likely Sunak versus Starmer competition, the US looks even less edifying with the possibility of a Trump vs Biden rematch. As I will not tire of noting, if one of the US gerontocrats stands, they lose but if they both stand, we all lose. #economy #business #election #government

ELECTION PREDICTION … 🥴 I normally throw caution to the wind at this stage of an election campaign and predict the result. In 2019 I was bang on with my prediction of a Tory majority of eighty. This election, however, is different. Sunak will not be PM on Friday. Other than that, I think it is impossible to accurately predict the number of Labour MPs who will be elected. How will the thirty per cent of undecided voters split? There are signs that they may be breaking for the Tories which isn’t that surprising as most of them are former Tory voters! But really? Will the Lib Dems become the official Opposition? Is making a fool of yourself an act of political genius? How many Reform UK MPs will be elected and will they be disciplined enough to make a real difference in the new House of Commons? Has the SNP bubble finally burst North of the Border and will Scottish independence disappear from the political agenda? These are all great questions. Answering them is rather problematic so I won’t try. 😩 To misquote the great Liberal PM Herbert Asquith : ‘Let’s wait and see …’
