CR2 published its statement of support for the new United States International Cyberspace and Digital Policy Strategy! Link: https://lnkd.in/eEmVRtXB We are pleased to see the strategy affirm the U.S.' commitment to a number of initiatives central to the work of CR2 and its members, such as: 🔶Advocating for a risk-based approach to cyber governance and the adoption of international standards/best practices to enable greater global interoperability and resilience; 🔶Reinforcing U.S. participation in international multilateral, multi-stakeholder bodies; 🔶Promoting cross-border data flows enhancing interoperability and market access among international partners. Some important keywords were exchanged today at this ENISA conference: 1) Citizen 🧑🦱👨🦳👧👷♀️ 2) Security 🔐 3) Privacy 🏡 4) Selective disclosure of personal data 📒 5) Trust model 🤝 Potential is working day after day with over 170 private and public country representatives from 20 EU countries, users and companies to better the technical, legal, regulatory, standardisation and business model frameworks needed to enable the #EUDIW. Lots of work still to be done 🛠️

Today, the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA)🛡️, in collaboration with the European Commission 🇪🇺, TÜV Informationstechnik GmbH - TÜVIT (TÜV NORD GROUP) and D-Trust hosted the 10th annual Trust Services and eID Forum 🔐. From Potential, we were proud to have Philippe Nieto, our deputy coordinator, representing us at this important gathering in Heraklion, Greece🇬🇷. ENISA continues to shape EU cyber policy, enhancing the trustworthiness of ICT products, services and processes with cybersecurty certification schemes, and working closely with Member States and EU bodies to address Europe's future cyber challenges💻⚙️. The UN Security Council (#UNSC) has long elicited debate about its utility, impact, and the veto in an evolving world, not least in recent months. As geopolitics change, so too are perceptions of what constitutes international peace and security and how to maintain it in light of new and evolving security threats such as from #cyber, #ICT and other #technologies. A new The Stimson Center project is exploring the role of the Council on these topics - what is the potential and what are the sensitivities? These were also questions for states to consider as part of an Arria-formula meeting held earlier this month. It was organized by the Republic of Korea and co-hosted by the United States and Japan. The meeting's focus on the evolving #cyber threat landscape and the implications for international peace and security was a good barometer for understanding what states view as priority cyber security and cybercrime threats right now. It aligns well with discussions and work being undertaken in the #UNCyberOEWG and the recent 2024 Cyber Stability Conference organized by UNIDIR — UN Institute for Disarmament Research. My colleague Shreya Lad and I captured some highlights and takeaways from the Arria-formula meeting in a commentary published last week:

Thank you Allison Pytlak for this excellent report. Having participated myself in the first UN Security Council (#UNSC) (informal) Arria meeting in 2016, I am encouraged to see that member states are increasingly debating how the #UNSC could adress threats to peace and security in the cyberspace: „By referencing types of malicious cyber activity and tools such as ransomware attacks on government, sanctions evasion, cryptocurrency theft for financing terrorism, and as a challenge to nonproliferation, the ROK highlighted that there is a “gray area” of cross-over between traditional concepts of cybercrime and cyber security. The ROK suggested that the UNSC could address such threats as part of its primary mandate and in a complementary way to efforts in the UNGA.“ „France, Japan, Slovenia, Switzerland, and the BENELUX countries offered support for Council uptake of this issue in ways that, broadly speaking, would focus on information gathering or studying specific threats or incidents, with some of these states referencing the context of sanctions, in particular…“ „The United Kingdom proposed comprehensive engagement with relevant UNGA committees and specialized agencies to address the evolving nature of cyber threats.“ Latvia suggested it would be helpful if the Council could coordinate on the development of instruments in the UNGA such as a cyber program of action, and that the Council should be kept abreast of developments in the OEWG. The Philippines recognized the pivotal role of the Council in addressing the evolving nature of threats within its mandates but said it gives primacy to the discussions in the OEWG.“ „Slovenia posited that the Council should address incidents where cyber/ICT activities exacerbate conflict, just as it would investigate threats posed by conventional means and examine activities that affect civilians and cause humanitarian suffering.“

With a focus on building alliances, promoting secure digital ecosystems, and enhancing cybersecurity resilience worldwide, this strategy has the potential to shape global norms and elevate the U.S.'s role in cyber diplomacy. #CyberSecurity #GlobalPartnerships

Today, my journey as an MEP comes closer to its finish line! And what an eventful final plenary session it was as I had the honour of presenting my file on Managed Security Services (MSS) that was swiftly adopted with an overwhelming majority. This targeted amendment to the Cybersecurity Act introduces a cyber-certification scheme for MSS providers, a key move towards preventing market fragmentation and establishing the EU Cybersecurity Reserve. As the Lead Negotiator, I’ve seen first-hand the critical role MSS companies can play in supporting entities like SMEs and local authorities that often lack in-house expertise and resources. This is why we went further with a new provision that acknowledges the importance of providing robust financial and technical support, such as through the Digital Europe Programme. Not to mention the better emphasis on skilling, stakeholder transparency, and accountability! Over the past five years, I’ve made it my mission to shape an EU digital policy that prioritizes the needs of the most vulnerable.
