In university, we were asked to write our goals down on a piece of paper. I said, “I don’t know what my goals are, but I know what I don’t want – I will never go into sales, and I will never own my own company.” Simon Sinek talks about how our brain doesn’t understand negatives, so to my brain, those goals became, “I will go into sales, and I will own my own company.” This idea was reinforced by my golf coach, Cindy Miller, who always says, “If you want to hit the ball over the water, don’t think ‘don’t hit the water,’ or you’ll end up there. Instead, think ‘hit the green.’” Fast forward 20 years of selling technology and (almost) 20 years of running a marketing agency, and here I am!
