Here is yet another lucid and incisive analysis from the pen of Stephen Collinson, essentially the only journalist at CNN who seems able to place the continuous, merciless flow of current events into a larger context. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he is snapped up by another media outlet that prizes his analytical skills more than CNN, where ‘analysis’ is understood as corralling several ‘experts’ (talking heads) into their studios and giving them wide open opportunities to toss off soft-pitch soundbites. This approach is a guarantee that the discussion will be limited to a regurgitation of the facts on the ground. Who saw what? (But usually very thin on ‘Why?)
Not entirely relevant to the above, but I woke up this morning thinking about the fast-approaching presidential debate, If I were Ms. Harris, I would begin, at the earliest opportunity, with the following preface: ‘I’ve been a prosecutor for more than two decades. The person standing beside me at the other mic has recently been convicted of 34 violations of federal law. There may be more such convictions on the way. He has been indicted by another federal court grand jury, and by a state court. I don’t plan on addressing him directly this evening; but when I make reference to him, it will be either as ‘the defendant’ or ‘the convict.’ That would set the proper tone for the evening.
