For 8 months, Aliyah Jones, a qualified, educated Black professional—navigated the job market with little success. Frustrated by the lack of opportunities despite her impressive resume, she decided to conduct an experiment. She created a second LinkedIn profile, presenting herself as a white woman with the same qualifications. The result? Recruiters flooded her inbox, offering opportunities she had never been considered for as herself. This isn't just Aliyah's story—it's a stark reflection of the systemic bias that Black professionals face in corporate America. Even when equally (or more) qualified, the playing field remains unequal. Let this be a call to action for hiring managers, recruiters, and leaders: It's not enough to claim diversity on paper. Bias, conscious or not, has real consequences for talented professionals who are overlooked simply because of the color of their skin. Change starts with awareness, but it must be followed by accountability and action. How is your organization ensuring fair and equitable hiring practices? #DiversityInHiring #EquityInEmployment #CorporateBias #BeTheChange #recruitment #workplaceculture

Very interesting piece. Although Recruiters and Hiring Managers share the most responsibility, the overlooked questions are: What are platforms like LinkedIn going to do about this? What systems and processes are they going to put in place to discourage companies from using their platform as a tool to perpetuate discrimination? Are they willing to penalise companies who are proven to practice discrimination? Can facilitators have the same impact as practitioners? Would love to hear answers to these questions.

It is unfortunate, but I truly believe that discrimination exists, particularly against Black individuals. This is why it is essential for us to unite and support one another whenever possible. It is disheartening to recognize that, when we achieve success, we sometimes overlook the importance of aiding our own community. Given the challenges of being Black, we must prioritize looking out for one another. I reside in Iowa, where the Black population is only one percent, and it often crosses my mind that my business could have progressed further had I been white. It is troubling to acknowledge that, even in 2024, these issues persist.

I’m sorry 😢 I’m over here thinking it’s so hard just being a woman, but I do recognize that your experiences as a Black women come with additional layers of struggle that I can’t fully understand. I see you, I hear you, and I’m committed to learning more about how to support and stand with you. 🫶🏼

I have been pursuing military officer positions for nearly a decade and have faced consistent rejections despite my qualifications. It has been disheartening to hear from my direct supervisors that I am deemed 'not qualified' for entry-level officer roles, particularly when I have observed my white counterparts being selected for these positions with significantly fewer qualifications. This is a challenge I am committed to addressing and will continue to advocate for equitable opportunities.

Every organization could perform the same experiment on itself to test the equity (or inequity) of its processes and outcomes. I wonder if any will dare to try it.

So let's add on being melanated and a woman who refuses to dye her well earned wisdom grays.
