Certainly, a billion dollars is a transformational gift-although the transformation might come in many positive ways or not. In my view, the best possible outcome might be increased representation of the local community in the medical school class so patients can see docs that are like them. Possibly a race to the top of the medical school rankings because hey!, who wants 100,000's in medical school debt? Medical students choosing specialties based on their interests rather than a specialty that will allow them to pay off loans fastest-maybe there is hope for Endocrinology in this scenario 😊! Only the future will tell. Is there any data on how NYU's student body was effected? Any unintended consequences? What are your thoughts about how this beyond generous gift might change Einstein, the student body, the faculty and everything else that follows?

An important step in overhauling the health care system to improve quality of care, treatment of patients, accessiblity to care, affordability of treatment, improving the overall potential of healthcare professional training, selection of those with the best overall potential to train, and other important issues that need to be addressed to maximize and improve healthcare in this country!

Education must be free. Charging students tuition? I think that's the worst you can do to your future entrepreneurs, medical doctors, state runners, reflective minds, high profile managers: 'Free' in that everyone who is gifted enough, needs to be supported to be able to live up to their best, and that way, pay back, and pay forward, to their communities - to society, peers, parents, children, future citizens. It should be in the interest of every, any state, to support their citizens to help build everyone's future. Those who don't (want to) invest into public higher education, and believe in private solutions of educating, do not grasp the incredible rift between privilege and gift. Speaking of parents, and how mine have given me a gift: I'm stating this as someone who comes from a workers' background, and who had the privilege, thanks to my parents' sparse savings, and other (not many) supporting sources, to having been able to study (at the University of Tuebingen); then, to study abroad, at the University of Texas at Austin; and then, to earn my doctorate at the ETH Zurich.

The roar of these students will be the best 30 seconds of your day. Dr. Gottesman should be a folk hero. If a billion-dollar donation can create a permanently tuition-free medical school, what other moonshots will bring tuition down from its prohibitively high number? “But it doesn’t really cost that much, students get aid” is not an answer for families who start filling with finacial anxiety in kindergarten because of the sticker price of universities. While focusing successfully on diversifying student bodies, nearly all private universities have simultaneously made higher education out-of-reach -- or non-aspirational -- for far more families. The future of American higher education is depending on aggressively addressing this issue, as schools quickly approach the $100,000 mark. And the school which does it first will reap the reputational rewards. Because it’s the right thing to do.

Does Bloomberg's $1 Billion Donation to The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Really Matter? 🤔 Mike Bloomberg just dropped $1 billion to make the med school tuition-free, but it doesn't move the needle for the healthcare industry. Here's why: Yes, it opens doors for some students who might not afford med school otherwise, and that's great to break this financial barrier. But let's be realistic—Johns Hopkins med school accepts about 100 new students each year. In the face of a nationwide healthcare labor shortage, this initiative isn't going to fix the problem even if we fill all of these seats with people who deserve it or come from worse socioeconomic backgrounds. The same problem applies to my alma mater, NYU, which has offered tuition-free med school since 2018. These programs are simply too exclusive, so you don't really see a needle moving one way or another. We've got a healthcare system bogged down by inefficiencies and systemic problems. We make it way too hard to be a doctor in this country, and even harder to get doctors from abroad to practice here. Free tuition for a select few won't fix it. Don't get me wrong—Bloomberg's donation is a commendable step in the right direction. But let's not let the benevolent headlines blind us into thinking it's a cure-all. We need to rethink how aspiring healthcare workers can access medical education and break down the systemic barriers causing a labor shortage that is getting out of hand. It's time to look for innovative solutions and revolutionary approaches to streamline our healthcare system. Wow! We now have a fourth US medical school that is set up for free tuition! Thanks to the generosity of Mike Bloomberg ($1B donation, 2024), The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine will provide free tuition to students matriculating from families making less than $300K. Ruth Gottesman's donation ($1B, 2024) to ALBERT EINSTEIN SCHOOL OF MEDICINE earlier this year provides free tuition to all students. Ken Langone and others donated ($600M, 2018+) to NYU Grossman School of Medicine for free tuition to all students. Roy Vagelos' donation ($250M, 2017) to Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons provides grants to all need-based students, eliminating debt. While I applaud these philanthropic efforts, I wonder how this impacts the strains in our current health system. We have a desperate need for more primary care physicians and pediatricians, however recent match data from NYU shows that tuition-free students continue to select sub-specialties for residency. In speaking with deans of some medical schools, including University of Michigan Medical School, Harvard Medical School , and Meharry Medical College, the biggest choke point in producing more doctors is a lack of residency spots which is controlled by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services budget. It seems we need additional funding to train more doctors in residency in comparison to medical school where applications remain steady. Medical debt continues to haunt Americans. Per KFF, about 40% of the population has some form of medical debt. I continually hear stories from would-be-patients who are afraid to visit the doctor, ER, or hospital due to unforeseen bills. Ultimately, I'm an optimist and know that many folx smarter than myself are working tirelessly to improve the system. The news around about the Bronx medical school, the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, being now tuition-free thanks to a $1 billion gift from Dr. Ruth Gottesman is amazing! Mrs. Gottesman was a former professor. But within this amazing give it holds some lessons- - I want wealthy people to help eat some of the issues of the world vs the world trying to eat the rich. - Student loan debt is one of the biggest burdens that new graduates can face. 10x that for medical students. They get an equal playing field being debt-free in this regard. Most students at the Einstein College of Medicine graduate with $200,000, now that’s no more. - In regards to financial and estate planning, if you’re married — bring your spouse into conversations about not only the budget for the household but the estate aspect as well. Sure, make them a beneficiary but bring them in! When it comes to that last point, here’s some context: Her husband, David Gottesman invested in Berkshire Hathaway in 1968 and held on. As Buffet asked him to. Mrs. Gottesman now has $11.7B of the stock — the stock is up ~30,000x in these 56 years. His instructions were simple in his will: “Do whatever you think is right with it”. Which she did with this amazing gesture! Amazing impact rippling off of one amazing story of relationships — one with Mr. Gottesman and Buffett and another with Dr. Gottesman and Dr. Ozuah.
