In the intersection of National Eating Disorders Awareness Week and Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month this year, we find ourselves at a pivotal moment. Within this critical juncture, individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD), their caregivers, and service providers navigate a complex system. This convergence highlights the significance of providing #holistic support, acknowledging the distinctive challenges encountered by those with #IDD in the realm of eating disorders. As we actively promote awareness during these dedicated observances, let's work towards fostering a more #inclusive understanding and delivering #comprehensive care for everyone in our communities. Simply put, inclusion matters. Advocacy is key. #AwarenessWeek #DevelopmentalDisabilities #InclusionMatters #EatingDisorderAwareness #EDAwareness #Alabama #EatingDisorders

Neurodiversity Celebration Week is a worldwide initiative that challenges stereotypes and misconceptions about neurological differences. The relationship between neurodivergence and people from LGBTIQ+ communities is a growing area of research. While limited, the evidence we do have shows that people with autism and/or ADHD are more likely to be part of LGBTIQ+ communities. The current research also reflects how ‘neurodiversity’ is sometimes used to talk only about autism and ADHD, when in fact, there are many different types of neurodiversity! Our Voices, Our Lives, Our Way is a joint initiative by LGBTIQ+ Health Australia and the National Ethnic Disability Alliance, codesigned by and for LGBTIQ+ people with disability. The initiative aims to encourage LGBTIQ+ people with a disability to self-advocate through storytelling and community-building, through an interactive learning website full of new resources, online workshops and a Resource Hub of existing information. A 2023 study used data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) to look at frequency of various types of substance misuse among adults with different categories of disability. The researchers found that substance use disorders (SUD) were more frequent among those with any disability than those without a disability. Specific types of disabilties were also linked to higher risk. These findings suggest that those with disabilities are a high-risk group for SUD, and interventions should be tailored to fit the needs of this population. In our lab, Drs. Cavazos-Rehg and Szlyk have interest in tailoring digital interventions for SUD based on the unique experiences and needs of this population.
