This might be hard to believe, but the number of U.S. hotels with an average daily rate of $1,000-plus in the first half of this year was 80, compared with 22 in 2019, according to new data from CoStar Group. Inflation-scarred budget travelers may be pulling back their spending, but affluent ones still have vacation money to spend. And hotels are happy to cash in, luring these coveted high-end customers and worrying less about the ones in the middle. I know that words matter, but I recently learned that "virtue signaling" is a thing. Virtue signaling in hospitality involves hoteliers and vacation rental hosts highlighting their virtues, like friendliness or compassion, in their property listings on sites such as Airbnb. Using virtue language (such as 'friendly neighborhood' or 'compassionate host') can boost hosts' earnings. Overdo it, and you erode trust and confidence with a potential guest instead of building it. Listings in conservative areas face stronger negative reactions to excessive virtue signaling compared to liberal regions. Believe it or not, the company Booking (dot) com has in its offer vacation homes that are on stolen land from indigenous Palestinan population. In many of these lands, Palestinan homes and livelihoods have been destroyed for giving space to the illegal occupation. By doing that, this multinational corporation is profiting from war crimes. At the same time, it contributes with deepening a system based on injustice and violence towards Palestinians. "These listings hide the criminal nature of settlements, a deceptive practice that ignores international law and generates profit from the longstanding human rights violations that have enabled the establishment and ongoing expansion of these settlements", states an excellent research from SOMO's colleague, Lydia de Leeuw .
