◻️ Stock Take Although last week’s landslide election victory for Keir Starmer’s Labour Party might have marked a seismic political shift, the initial reaction from markets was somewhat muted. This was perhaps due to strong polling in the months leading up to the election, allowing investors to effectively ‘price in’ the anticipated election results. ◻️ Wealth Check Anyone with a challenging job knows how hard it can be to stay on top of things at home as well as at work. Keeping track of your finances and ensuring your money works as hard as possible can be tricky when there are other matters to think about. However, there’s no need to try and keep that extra plate spinning when you can delegate it to a specialist. Lawyers and accountants can be very time poor, which often means personal life administration gets left at the bottom of the pile. They’re often too busy with their day job to put a strategy in place. ◻️ Last Words “It feels good, I have to be honest. Four-and-a-half years of work changing the party, this is what it is for – a changed Labour Party ready to serve our country, ready to restore Britain to the service of working people.” Sir Keir Starmer, the new British Prime Minister, celebrates his electoral victory. The first YouGov MRP projection of the 2024 UK General Election suggests that Keir Starmer and Labour could be heading to 10 Downing Street with a historic majority of over 190 seats. Not only would such a win be bigger than the number Tony Blair achieved in 1997, but it would in fact be the second largest majority in British political history after Stanley Baldwin’s 1924 figure. Our Managing Director Dominic Tayler takes a closer look at the economic challenges facing a new government and the potential implications. On the eve of the UK’s general election, this update provides commentary on the states of Labour, the Conservatives and Reform UK as they prepare to occupy greatly different electoral positions. We first relay conversations with Labour strategists about Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves’ suitability for restoring the party’s governing reputation and managing its progressive/socialist streak. The second section recaps the internal events that brought the Conservatives to perhaps their worst ever defeat and questions how quickly they can learn from it. That leads into Reform’s own vision for the next five years: if their hopes of precipitating a change from FPTP to proportional voting are still remote (even with the votes:seats disparity likely tomorrow), they’ll have no choice but to keep trying to push Rishi Sunak’s successors out of the conservative mainstream. #ukpolitics #ukelection2024 #labour #starmer #conservatives #sunak #reformuk #farage

The yawning gap in the opinion polls continues to be as wide as the jaws of a sandworm in the movie Dune for PM Sunak. But there is a scenario where they could dramatically narrow. It's week 2 of the UK General Election campaign and beyond the heat-but-no-light of the #tax row between #Labour 's Sir Keir Starmer and PM Sunak #financialmarkets remain relatively sanguine. But in this (mercifully brief!) commentary on the week I sketch out a fantasy scenario in which that could change abruptly and transform the contest into one for a hung parliament. To paraphrase an old adage : keep your fantasies close and your realities closer. We should begin to see more of the latter next week with the expected publication of the manifestos for Labour and the Green Party, likely also those for the Conservative Party and the LibDems. I and my expert colleagues will be giving first - and later more detailed - impressions in series of podcasts ... do please watch this space #ukelection #generalelection #labourparty #conservativeparty #tax #ukeconomy Simmons & Simmons

London's main index has opened higher this morning as election talks grows in both Europe and the US. Tomorrow will see Brits head to polling stations to vote in what could be the Conservative's worst election since the turn of the century. Keir Starmer's Labour is predicted to win 484 of the 650 seats up for grabs, outperforming the 418 taken by former party leader Tony Blair in his landslide win back in 1997 and also the most in its history. Meanwhile, in the US, investors are starting to bet on the likelihood of a Trump presidency after President Joe Biden's self-proclaimed loss at the first set of debates last week.
