Labour plans to establish Great British Energy, a government-owned power company, as the central hub of the UK's energy system for the first time since the industry's privatisation in 1990. With £8bn in investment, GB Energy will work alongside and often in partnership with existing private sector suppliers to decarbonise the electricity supply by 2030. The plan is to be largely invisible to households, financing and helping build low-carbon infrastructure, such as windfarms and nuclear reactors. Developers have struggled to find the right balance between the theorized benefits of smaller size and the economic penalties. This is illustrated by the repeated efforts by Westinghouse to find the nuclear sweet spot. In the 1990s it promoted a new 600 MW design, the AP600, but it had no takers. It then upgraded the technology to produce the AP1000 design, with a capacity of 1100 MW. This is the design that was constructed, with the problems noted earlier, at Vogtle. Most recently the company is trying to interest buyers in the AP300, yet another variation of the same technology that it is marketing as an SMR. The field of dreams comes to mind when it comes to power generation in this country.

Seriously? It actually sounds like he is bragging about this kind of load demand. Power transmission and generation creation isn't free, it's paid for by all the rate payers, there are those people who have have the resources to pay their rising electricity bill, and those who choose between groceries or heat/AC. Consuming copious amounts of gigawatts of power isn't something to brag about, it's something that should bring embarrassment. Data Centers are the obnoxious dinner guests that come to your party and eat ALL THE FOOD, leaving almost nothing for anyone else. 12:47 “You do a detailed load study… and that's really analyzing and engineering and understanding interconnections, backend power lines, everything else not just what's on those but what it would take to augment. It's always good to reflect on Prof. Bent Flyvbjerg project cost overrun data. It further highlights the large associatied risks with nuclear and hydro projects. Backwards thinking Malcolm Bambling, if humankind were to follow unquestioningly the reasoning of Prof. Bent Flyvbjerg, then neither the Suez Canal nor the Sydney Opera House should have been built. Or an ugly square box should have been plonked on Bennelong Point instead of Jørn Utzon’s glorious masterpiece gracing that site… Much of what is mistakenly diagnosed as “project cost overruns” is actually project cost under-estimates. This is done for tactical reasons by people operating within a system using the wrong decision-making tools for large, long-life assets. This behaviour goes on in both the public and private sectors.
