💬 “how can we make sure our voice is heard in the legislative and public policy conversation?” 🙋♂️ Simply, show up. Earlier this week I was on an advocacy panel and took on this question. And the more time I spend in halls of power, the answer becomes increasingly clear: Creating the change you want to see begins with showing up—whether it's speaking on panels about effective advocacy, visiting campuses to engage with local leaders, faculty, and teacher candidates, listening to local forums with candidates for elected offices, sending an email, or simply having a conversation with a family member, friend, or a neighbor. On my recent trips to Tennessee and North Carolina to represent Deans for Impact (DFI), change was afoot and I had the privilege of helping create some of it by SHOWING UP and keeping our vision for well-prepared teachers front of mind. Change happens when we’re present, intentional, and committed to the work ahead. So, keep showing up. (Thanks for moderating a thoughtful conversation, James McIntyre! And for giving me some new ideas, Diarese George, Ed.D, Aleah Guthrie, Cameron Armstrong Conn, JC Bowman, and Terrance Gibson). #Leadership #Advocacy #Pedagogy #DeansForImpact #DFI

Did you know that in Illinois the courts (including the Juvenile Detention Centers) are not subject to the Freedom of Information Act? As the most powerful branch of government, it is past time to shine a light on the judicial branch, to ensure the courts (and Juvenile Detention Centers) are upholding the principles of equity, accountability and efficacy. And yet after two years of trying, our lawmakers continue to block even a hearing on why it's so important to move the courts - and how they operate - out of the shadows. When they won't give you a hearing in Springfield, take the hearing to the people! I hope you'll join us for an important conversation that impacts us all. Learn more and register here: https://lnkd.in/gFF8eRHq “Every day, thousands of people enter courthouses across Illinois seeking justice. They might be asking for protection from an abuser, fighting to keep their home, working to keep custody of their children, or navigating a criminal case as a victim or a defendant [They might be a child being held at the Juvenile Temporary Detention Center]. We know the court system has historically favored people with wealth and racial privilege and disproportionately harmed those without. But we can only fight for a more fair and just court system if we have complete information about the workings of the courts. Without transparency, it’s impossible to have true accountability.” - Jonah Newman, Injustice Watch #transparency #accountability #courtsmatter #justice Briana Payton Jonah Newman Curtis J. We're hosting a panel from 12-1:30 p.m. on April 25 with Common Cause Illinois at BUILD Chicago Community Center to explore how Illinois Courts impact the lives of everyday people and why it is time they are subject to FOIA. Panelists include Rep. Curtis Tarver II, Illinois State Representative; Briana Peyton, Director for Policy & Advocacy at the Chicago Appleseed Center for Fair Courts; and Jonah Newman, Injustice Watch Editor. BGA Policy Analyst Sophia Van Pelt will be moderating. Learn more and register here: https://lnkd.in/gFF8eRHq

A strong democracy relies on an informed citizenry, robust protections for individual rights, and a commitment to upholding constitutional values. We are proud to partner with organizations that educate, defend, and advance these principles in meaningful ways. As we observe #ConstitutionDay, nonprofits like the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) continue to work to protect free speech on college campuses, ensuring that students and faculty with diverse backgrounds can engage openly in discussion without fear of censorship. Similarly, the Institute for Justice provides critical legal support to defend Americans' constitutional rights -- from property rights to economic liberty, fighting for those whose voices might otherwise go unheard. We also commend the National Constitution Center for its commitment to educating people of all ages about the Constitution. Through innovative programs and accessible resources, they help foster a deeper understanding of our nation's founding principles, ensuring that future generations remain well-equipped to safeguard our democracy. To learn more about the importance of this day, we invite you to browse the National Constitution Center's Constitution Day resources: https://lnkd.in/eXBPCWej

When worlds collide -- thankful that colleagues and former classmates like Ashley Stoneburner, MPH and Dr. Peiyin Hung are focusing on such important work in the public health / healthcare field. An excerpt from the article: Ashley Stoneburner is a data science manager at March of Dimes, a nonprofit organization that works to improve health outcomes for mothers and babies. Stoneburner told The Politic that today, “there are 5.6 million women who live in counties with no or limited access to maternity care services.” March of Dimes defines maternity care deserts as areas where there is limited or no access to birthing hospitals, birth centers offering obstetric care, or obstetrics providers. For those who live in maternity care deserts, “some rural residents have to travel as far as almost two hours to reach the nearest hospital with obstetrics services. That was the outlier, but that is the substantial burden,” said Dr. Peiyin Hung, a professor at the University of South Carolina who specializes in geographic disparities in healthcare. Lack of obstetrics care is just one of the issues pregnant people face in rural areas. “More than 20% of rural residents do not have the internet to access a lot of resources or know how to leverage existing community resources,” said Dr. Hung. “Only looking at the most underserved communities leaves behind a lot of disadvantaged populations that have, on average, some resources—but who are still outliers compared to other communities.” #MaternalHealth #MaternalMortality #MaternalInfantHealth #MaternalChildHealth #RuralHealth #HealthDisparities #MaternityCare

Hello all! I am doing a study for some personal information collection for the Russell County Democrats. Please answer this question honestly, your opinion. I have been a voter in [CD-9]( VA) since I could vote. Your personal opinion will help me further understand these issues from a rural democrat American perspective. I’m a politics major at uva with a concentration on systems and community management. To the UVA students reading this, we have a duty to change this university for the better always. That’s why I want all opinions I can get here. Your opinion will help me personally in this matter. That is my personal belief. Take it as you wish. Be good my friends. PS: these issues are ongoing, and I am always open for discussion! Opinions are my own :)
