Letters of Intent are now being accepted for 2024 Biodiversity Conservation Grant With major support from Toyota Motor North America, the National Environmental Education Foundation (NEEF) is excited to announce $200,000 in grant funding to support shovel-ready pollinator habitat enhancement projects on America’s Public Lands. Habitat enhancement projects should directly support the creation, restoration, remediation, improvement, and/or protection of habitats for important pollinator species such as butterflies, bees, bats, and more. The project should directly impact pollinators on at least 200 acres of public land. Additionally, projects should incorporate community outreach and engagement activities designed to educate and empower the public to help enhance pollinator habitats. Eligibility Requirements: * Open to non-profit 501(c)(3) organizations, state or federal government agencies, federally recognized tribes and local governments, and educational institutions. * Projects must be on public lands defined as any local, state, or federal government- or nonprofit-owned land that is accessible to the public for recreational use on a regular basis. This grant period will run from 7/1/2024 to 6/30/2025. The grant competition will be a two-part process. Those interested in applying must first submit a Letter of Intent (LOI) as an online application. NEEF will then select and invite a small number of finalists to submit a full application for review. While we’re grateful for the recent financial support from an anonymous donor, allowing GrowNYC to continue food scrap collection until June 2024 despite City budget cuts, the future of our 7 vital coalition partners is at stake. The fight to preserve community composting is far from over. Our partners— Big Reuse, LES Ecology Center, Earth Matter NY, New York Botanical Garden, Queens Botanical Garden, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, and Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden are still in jeopardy, and their essential roles in processing collected scraps and providing educational services are on the line. The fight is not over until funding is restored for ALL community composting initiatives. GrowNYC remains resolute in supporting our coalition partners. The impending closure of these essential NYC Compost Project partners is a setback for environmental education and community engagement. Addressing Australia’s restoration efforts start with seed diversity. This insightful article from The Conversation sheds light on the challenge: only 10% of native plant species' seed is readily available. Improving our national seed supply systems and fostering collaborations among conservationists, policymakers, and communities along all stages of the supply chain are vital steps towards creating more #resilientecosystems. Since 2021 the Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife has supported over 25 community-led #nurseries in NSW, SA and Victoria to collect local seeds, establish native seed banks and revegetate degraded areas. To date nearly 1 million native plants have been grown for local restoration!! These nurseries and #volunteers are contributing to Australia’s long-term #environmentalresilience. Our ranch ecologist team Kala Eiring and Janét Moore were out at Durham Ranch in Wright, WY recently. They were working the Climate Smart program on one of the largest Buffalo ranches in North America at a whopping 55,000 acres! 🤯 The Climate Smart program ensures accessibility to all ranchers, regardless of background or scale of operation, through its open availability of grants, loans, and subsidies. Through collaborative partnerships with diverse stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs, and private sector organizations, the program extends its reach and impact, fostering equity in sustainable agriculture initiatives. *New* paper from the Ocean Philanthropy Research Initiative published open access in Conservation Biology. Funding decisions influence where, how, and by whom conservation is pursued globally. In the context of growing calls for more participatory, Indigenous-led, and socially just conservation, we empirically evaluated how philanthropic foundations working in marine conservation globally engage communities in grant-making decisions. Bottom line: Engagement is limited. We can and must do better. Co-authored by academics and funding practitioners, our paper makes a constructive contribution to ongoing discussions about enhancing equity and effectiveness in conservation philanthropy. 🌏 For nearly 20 years, the Alliance for Zero Extinction (AZE) has worked to save the planet's most vulnerable species through governmental protected area designations, private protected areas, and Indigenous or community-led conservation stewardship. 🌿🐦 The AZE Initiative Fund, launched in 2022, builds on AZE’s successes through a $10-million, five-year initiative to reduce species extinctions. Funded by Rainforest Trust and matched by $2 million from American Bird Conservancy, this initiative focuses on the protection of AZE sites, which hold the world’s most threatened species. 🦜 AZE invites applications for projects to increase protections or support research at AZE sites worldwide. 🌎 Grants will be awarded to non-profit conservation organizations to: 1️⃣ Establish or expand public or private protected areas at AZE sites. 2️⃣ Conduct research at unprotected or partially protected AZE sites to inform and improve protection approaches.
