This year, I was one of 25 student-athletes chosen from across the country to be a part of the 2023-2024 Engaged Athlete Fellowship with The Team, which empowers a diverse class of motivated student-athletes to strengthen nonpartisan civic participation on their teams, their campuses, and their broader communities. Through this program, I developed and executed a year-long project linking civic engagement with athletics through an initiative I called The Commodores Care Challenge. The Commodores Care Challenge was a year-long competition among Vanderbilt student-athletes to see which team could contribute the most hours towards community service. Born from the idea that athletes thrive on competition, the challenge aimed to incentivize more students to get involved in their community. By tapping into the competitive spirit of student-athletes, the challenge highlighted the profound impact that service can have in making a difference in the lives of others. This year, Vanderbilt student-athletes contributed over 1,500 hours, more than 3x the amount they did the prior year. I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to participate in this fellowship program during my last year of college athletics.
