This time last year, I was staring down the barrel of 2023 with a strange mix of excitement and trepidation. A new post-pandemic era had dawned, and with it came big ideas, and big world changes, like the advent of AI being implemented everywhere we looked. No one knew what hopes (or fears) might be realised in the year to come. And when the media is filled with both personal and economic devastation around the world, it’s hard for anyone to know how to prepare for tomorrow. Do you ramp up and recruit, or do you batten down and be careful? Do you be sensible and play safe? Or be brave and play to win? Well, the awards industry has been pivoting and rallying year-on-year to provide what companies need to recognise their teams. This has included changing their format time and time again, moving from live, to online, back to live, and then back to online again! Awards deadlines have moved to account for new calendar events, like celebration bank holidays, and to give people the time they needed to get prepared, because people are more stretched than ever in their roles. For me, continuing our growth has been about listening to my intuition about what to do and when to do it, making sure everything we do is worthwhile in one way or another, building relationships and supporting our business partners, and creating a firm strategy so that the whole team knows where we are going, and how we are going to get there! What I learned from attending the ESPYs… For those who know me, you’re aware of my love for sports. There's just something captivating about the world of athletics – the competition, unwavering passion, and sheer determination. All these qualities are what make the ESPYs more than just a celebration of athletic excellence; it's a tribute to the essence of sports. First, if you know me, you know I’m a sports nerd. I love sports and everything sports evoke: competition, passion, determination, perseverance, the list goes on. Here are the profound insights that I gained from my experience at the ESPYs: • Everyone's human, even your heroes: Meeting your sports idols is an exhilarating experience, but it's essential to remember that they, too, are humans with their dreams, doubts, and flaws. At the heart of it all, they are just like us, embodying the shared humanity that connects us all. So when you meet your heroes, treat them not as untouchable idols but as fellow humans. • Champions are made through endless practice: It's tempting to assume that the best of the best reached their pinnacle effortlessly. But that’s quite the opposite. Champions put in hours, days, and years of relentless practice, continuously honing their skills. Their journey is a testament to the value of practice and the unwavering passion that propels them to extraordinary heights. One of the highlights of the night for me? Witnessing the wizard of words and melody himself, Chance The Rapper, fine-tuning his sound checks and delivering an electrifying live performance. It was a living example of how practice and passion, whether on the stage, on the field, or a demo call, create the magic we witness. Oh, and those casual conversations with LeBron, Jennie Finch, and Shaq? That was a pretty cool bonus. The ESPYs are not just about celebrating athletes; they are a reminder that greatness is achieved through hard work, resilience, and embracing our shared humanity.

This is already incredible, but check out their website and you’ll immediately understand why these are the most deserving students. 2) If you did, then you now grasp the insanely positive impact this education will have on their future, on their quality of life, and the lives of everyone they love. 💵💕 Don’t you want to witness that firsthand? Don’t get me wrong, I am often a couch potato with my husband Lucas, but this gala is a one-night-per-year chance to see the joy in their eyes as everyone celebrates these bright young stars. 🤩 3) Everyone benefits from a more educated community. Data proves a clear correlation between reduced crime rates and increased access to education- a quick Google search will pull up dozens of studies. 📉🏡 This is a night to go out, have fun, be inspired and support a cause that is actively creating opportunities where they don’t exist and directly changing human lives for the better. 1/2) If you are somehow unenrolled by a worthy cause, the presence of joy, AND the community benefits of attending this event, then you should know I will at least be entertaining. If you don’t know me, I have been described as very emotive and expressive. The happy tears are sure to be flowing, but I could be overwhelmed by all the power and love at this event and full-on ugly-cry in public… 🥹😭 but hey, if it gets you to attend, I’ll save you a tissue! I had a small involvement with Dr Michael Myers OAM and the Re-Engineering Australia Foundation Ltd. I think they did some amazing things and helped little Australia punch well above her weight. I should acknowledge many educators and students and industry sponsors were also critical to this outcome. I saw how Michael and REA had been able to influence school-aged children, and focussed STEM programs within schools to provide real world-like experiences that were/are of value to Defence, defence and space industry in Australia. I also saw how the initial F1 in Schools program not only provided STEM challenges, but also business challenges as students and schools had to look to industry for assistance and sponsorship to truly form world beating teams. In my time Australia, and in particular South Australia, did produce world-beating teams. Since those earlyish days most of Australia caught up to the South Australian successes. Now, I'm well aware that STEM is not the be all and end all when it comes to Defence and defence industry. But I could see how the F1 in Schools program, that also then developed the Subs in Schools, 4x4 In Schools and more recently Space in Schools programs, could morph into programs that also could develop those necessary non-STEM career paths too. I would like to think that enterprising entities and/or people, can see the value in these programs and open conversations with Michael and REA's Board members to ensure these programs not only continue, but grow into an important option to motivate students for careers in Defence, defence industry and space. Perhaps that might be an enterprising industry association (Defence Teaming Centre) or an enterprising Government agency (Defence SA) or a combination of entrepreneurial companies. These things do take time and money to coordinate well.
