Not a lot of people know that I led over 50 speaking events before I graduated from high school. Some of the greatest singers of our generation learned how to belt a tune in their church choirs. While I don't claim any fame or greatness, I too learned how to speak in church - often being asked to give the same talk over and over again to larger and larger groups across regions and for all ages. When I speak today, it feels familiar. It feels familiar because I am always simply delivering a deeply felt passion and then stepping away, where my inner child expects to not be heard or to perhaps be told I didn't do it right, to try again. When I step away, I aim to leave. I don't think about staying. I often don't understand why I would? And to this day I am shocked when someone touches me on the shoulder as I scamper toward an exit, head down, notes and papers in hand. I am surprised when they share a tearful and deep story. I am surprised when their story leads to more people gathering, thanking, explaining, and hugging. Yet I am so deeply grateful. This lack of expectation allows me to feel a deep impact each time I speak at an event. I never go in planning or looking to move someone or touch their soul. And to be honest, it brings up a lot of complicated and mournful story lines when I admit to myself that this is something that is intrinsic to me because of who and where I came from - people and systems that I haven't trusted or been attached to for the majority of my life. Thankfully the very tools that I am teaching are the ones I Know I Can use to help heal this complicated narrative.
