<< What does nature have to teach us about healing from trauma? And how might those of us aspiring to good and generative lives start to function like an ecosystem rather than a collection of separate, siloed projects? We are in kinship. How to make that real — and in making it real, make it more of an offering to the whole wide world? >> 🎧 🌱 💯 https://lnkd.in/ejZ3sefw The On Being Project 👏

A book called "Bad Therapy: Why the Kids Aren't Growing Up" by Abigail Shrier is making the rounds. Been texting with colleagues back and forth a lot the last few days about it. I have been curious about psychotherapy's impact on our culture for a bit now. I love therapy. It has helped me. I am a therapist. And dogma of all kinds freaks me out - including therapeutic dogma. Someone asked on one of my posts what has changed the most in my couples therapy practice over the last 20 years. What has changed the most is spouses come into my office diagnosing their partner in more than half of my cases now. As someone who always seems to have one foot in the "other" camp, I started putting a chair out front of my therapy office 9 years ago now - not offering any mental health anything - just a human who was simply being human with other humans - listening to their experience. Gun violence, racism, and polarization gripped me and I wasn't sure if therapy was going to directly impact those things. It was a kind of a hair-pulling "wtf is going on?" action. I am still learning but what I continue to question is: Does therapy help us build community and belonging or does it detract from it? Are we overindexing on our fragility and psychopathology? Does therapy become a distraction from passing more mental health-promoting social policies like universal healthcare, school funding reforms, reparations, sensible gun laws etc that might have a bigger impact on mental health? Is even how we deliver help and care hierarchical? Can we show compassion as equals? I do take these questions to my own analyst's couch. LOL I don't have solutions. What I do know is I am called to hold paradoxes and experiment. Here is an 11-minute documentary on a film student did on our project. If you fancy joining me, I will be out listening in San Francisco and Austin in April. #mentalhealth #badtherapy
