A few weeks ago, we began the process of updating our company values and principles. During this process, I came across a historical document from Nike dating back to 1977 (or 1970), which outlined their guiding principles for employees at that time. These are the core ideas that Nike started with... kind of like their own special rules for success. They were more than just values – they were principles for how Nike, as a business and the people who work there, should behave and act in their everyday interactions - with each other as employees, customers and partners. These principles were developed way back in 1977 and were written in such a way to help make sure everyone at Nike understood these ideas clearly. Clear communication was prioritised - a down-to-earth style, free of complex jargon and convoluted sentences. No poetic prose. Just plain language for everyone to grasp. The simpler, the better! Some things are timeless ❗ This is a picture of Phil Knights Manifesto for Nike in 1980... To think these 10 points started to create company values & a culture for a business, that 44 years on has grown and evolved to being a top global brand with an annual revenue of $51.217B in 2023.... Yes it's mind blowing, but it also doubles down on the importance of having a solid and healthy culture and the right people in place, who are aligned to company values. Anytime a consumer walks into a Nike store they should feel represented. No matter who they are, where they come from, or what hurdles they have had to jump over to get here. At Nike we believe that if you have a body you are an athlete. I had the pleasure of creating and facilitating a training on how we can better Serve Athletes of all Abilities to some of our athlete team. No matter how many times I conduct this training I am always left with a different sense of fulfillment hearing the story’s that our athletes have to share. CONTEXT IS EVERYTHING I always loved Nike communication. It felt empowering and inclusive. It felt right. The latest Nike campaign ahead of the Olympics feels different. (link in the comments) I'm a strong believer in leading with empathy. Kindness is the greatest business superpower. I don't see winning in toxic egos. I don't see winning in selfishness. I don't see winning in humiliating others. I don't see winning in crushing anyone's dream. I don't see winning making you better than everyone else. Winning doesn't make you bad or good. When doing something new, it's tempting to get it just right before you launch. The thing is, it will never be perfect and you're going to notice the imperfections much more than anyone else. Best way to improve is to start getting outside feedback. The more you review, the more you're going to obsess over tiny imperfections. Over analysis = paralysis. Personally I think these Nike ads are trash. "Winning isn't for everyone" as it is defined in the ad is shallow and narcissistic. It feeds the dumpster fire that's become our culture. So what is winning? Lambos?, 2mm followers on Insta? $5mm NIL deals? Crushing your opponent when they are down? Winning is working 3 jobs and studying at night to pay for a college degree. Winning is getting TO Olympic trials. Winning is starting a small business and betting your life savings on it. Winning is getting up the day after you are fired and leaning into what's next. Winning is going to an AA meeting when you have hit rock bottom. Winning is taking your spouse who has cancer to treatment everyday and being the rock they need when, for better or worse, you are in the midst of worse. All of that is winning. The ad and the attitude are not helpful. Does the ad represent Cole Hocker? What about Simone Biles? How about Suni Lee? Or maybe Anita Alvarez? I've never 'won' any of the gravel bike races I have raced in. Including Unbound, a 200 mile monster, but I have PR'ed. But then again, my peers who are mid 50's couldn't conceive doing that race, let alone finish it. Did I win? Yeah. So do better Nike. The ad isn't winning.
