Reaching out to ask for your support in: helping to create and foster purposeful opportunities for equitable futures; making an impact on the lives of individuals and entire families; and showing Opportunity Youth what it means to have a village (professionally and personally)! - Where were you (on your journey) when you caught your first break? - What skills did you have / what skills did you not yet have? - What impact did your mentor(s) have on your career trajectory? - Were there barriers that you needed support overcoming? - How did it feel when someone believed in you early on in your career? - Do you currently have an ally, and if so, why does it matter to know you're not in the fight alone? These are just some of the questions I'd like you to think about as you consider lending your time, wisdom, guidance, mentorship, financial investment, etc. with our students and alumni. We have embarked on another Black History Month. It’s a time for many to reflect, learn, educate and celebrate the milestones of Black history. Read Marcia Blake's reflection below. I believe it’s important for people of all ethnicities to reflect on Black History Month, as it challenges negative stereotypes ingrained in cultures. There should be effort in celebrating Black Canadian achievements, from the early enslaved individuals to those living in Canada today. While I reflected, a few thoughts came to mind. • Does the history of Black people have any impact on you? • Do you have colleagues, friends, relatives, or clients who are of the Black race, and what are your thoughts about them? • What are your perceptions of the Black race? Do you think it’s important to celebrate Black history annually? Again, my thoughts; the more knowledge of the Black race, the better understanding and appreciation you’ll have, knowing the Black race has a place here in this world just like everybody else. Nikki Giovannis thought-provoking lines beautifully capture the essence of Black History Month. If Black History Month is not viable Then the wind does not carry the seeds And drop them on fertile ground Rain does not dampen the land And encourage the seeds to root The sun does not warm the earth And kiss the seedlings and tell them plain You’re as good as anybody else You’ve got a place here too Happy Black History Month. #BlackHistoryMonth #BHM2024

Happy Black History Month! As we honour Black History Month under the theme "Black Excellence: A Heritage to Celebrate; a Future to Build," we embark on a journey of reflection, celebration, and action. This month serves as a vital platform for the coming generation to embrace their identity, building a future understanding, pride, and empowerment. Celebrating February as Black History Month is not merely a tradition; it's a crucial step in the ongoing fight against black racism. By delving into history, we equip ourselves with the knowledge and awareness necessary to confront systemic racism head-on, fostering a society built on equality and justice. Moreover, Black History Month offers a profound to acknowledge and celebrate the myriad contributions of African, Caribbean, and Black (ACB) communities to the fabric of Canada's cultural and societal landscape. Their resilience, innovation, and unwavering spirit have played an integral role in shaping our nation's history and progress. Yet, even amidst celebration, we cannot ignore the stark realities faced by ACB communities, including disproportionate rates of HIV. This month calls us to take action, stand united in solidarity, and advocate for the rights and dignity of all. As we commemorate Black Excellence, let us not only honour the past but also commit to building a future where every individual, regardless of race or background, can thrive and contribute to the rich tapestry of Canadian society. Together, we can build a more inclusive and equitable nation, where the legacy of Black Excellence continues to inspire generations to come. ACCHO and Black CAP

Black History Month is a time to learn more about the stories of Black Canadians and the many other important contributions that Black Canadians and their communities have made to this country's history and continued growth. How can you celebrate Black History Month in your TR spaces? 1. Create a book club featuring books written by Black authors and encourage conversation and connection. 2. Give clients a platform to share their experiences, perspectives, and stories. 3. Attend a local shop/market and support a black-owned business. 4. Showcase the work of Black artists in your spaces. 5. Look for opportunities to volunteer at a local non-profit organization that supports Black communities.

"Juneteenth requires you to be present, in the moment, and very specific about why you are showing up to celebrate it. It’s important for everyone to remember where it came from, but also how it's developed in other parts of the African diaspora within and outside of the United States." If you're looking to educate yourself and support locally black owned businesses this Juneteenth, check out this article with a list of celebration events happening around the Twin Cities today: http://spr.ly/6044gEcLa

This year Black History Month is about reclaiming narratives and whilst it is wonderful to be highlighted and championed during this month please do not ignore the everyday lived experience of Black people, and not as a monolith but as individuals. Recognise your colleagues, your friends, your peers etc. Personally i love October for BHM, but i also keep that same energy every year and all year round. This is not to isolate the struggle of what people go through but to highlight how amazing we are as everyday people, deserving of all things. Often Black History feels like the opportunity to point out the success of certain individuals but i've learnt that success doesn't come, if not powered by community, encouragement, resilience and opportunity. - Share a persons story - go to an event outside of your comfort zone - donate to a charity - sponsor a cool idea or event - invest in new relationships - encourage mentorship or sponsorship - Volunteer your time to something that might need your knowledge or resource - Say something nice and mean it - Put someone on (talk about nicely) in the rooms they cannot enter - Share an educational tool that might allow people to feel something or do better - Visit a place that you wouldn't have thought of to feel inspired. Above all when you've done it - don't stop there make an effort to be consistent.
