34. That is the average class size for a high school in Nevada according to the National Center for Education Statistics. How can a teacher effectively teach each student equitably in a class that large? I don't think they can. One of the reasons we began Lutheran Neighborhood Schools is to address the class size problem. At our schools each class has 10 students. Our teachers have the time, space, and resources to teach those 10 students. We're rethinking the accepted norms about education. This is just the beginning.

While it's encouraging to see California exploring creative teacher recruitment and retention solutions, we need to ask ourselves—why aren't we paying our teachers enough? This article about providing housing assistance to teachers addresses a symptom of the teacher shortage, not the root cause. Teachers deserve to be compensated for the invaluable work they do. Instead of temporary fixes, we should focus on ensuring our educators are paid what they deserve, so they can thrive both inside AND outside the classroom. https://hubs.li/Q02PkJR20 #k12education #teacherretention #edleadership

Would you want to trade off better student outcomes for teacher retention? That's exactly what we're seeing in Chief Mike Miles's biggest educational experiment in Houston. There is more oversight and restrictions for teachers such as tying teacher pay to student outcomes, restructuring lesson plans, and requiring students to participate every 4 minutes. While test scores are important, I see this as a short-term gain for long-term losses. We may lose many good teachers which will result in lower test scores down the road. What do you guys think of these types of restrictions? heres the full article https://lnkd.in/gfrxWhBd #houstontx #phoenixazeducation #teacherretention

Excited to share the first statewide look at uncertified teachers in Texas and how they impact student achievement. Link to policy brief: https://shorturl.at/6T9q7 Some key highlights: 1. Nearly half of first-time new teacher hires are uncertified 2. Uncertified teachers made up over 80% of new hires in 55 counties 3. 72% of uncertified new teachers have no prior experience working in Texas public schools 4. Nearly 1 in 5 uncertified new teachers do not hold a bachelor’s degree 5. Students with new uncertified teachers perform significantly worse in reading and math, unless that teacher has previous experience working in a Texas public school
