Since launching two years ago, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline has fielded 10 million calls, chats, and texts. While this level of engagement is promising, awareness of the resource continues to lag. In fact, only 23% of Americans say they're at least somewhat familiar with 988. But there are reasons for hope as states continue outreach efforts and the federal government works to make call responses more accurate. #MentalHealth #BehavioralHealth

REAL TALK TUESDAY: September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, and we all have a role raising awareness of suicide prevention and in helping to prevent suicides. Suicide remains a major public health problem. It is the 10th leading cause of death for all Americans. Each year, nearly 45,000 people take their own lives, and more than 375,000 people are treated in emergency rooms for self-inflicted injuries related to suicide attempts. We ALL play a role in preventing others from self-harm/suicide. We should make every effort to “Connect to Protect” which highlights the important role that connections to family, friends, the community, and resources can play in preventing suicide. The goal is to encourage people to learn more about suicide warning signs, risk factors, and supportive responses so they can be there for a family member, friend, or peer who may be at risk. The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is a national network of local crisis centers that provides free and confidential support to people experiencing a suicidal crisis or emotional distress 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The Lifeline can be reached by dialing 9-8-8 or go to https://988lifeline.org/. #SuicidePreventionMonth #ConnectToProtect #HelpIsAvailable #988Lifeline #MentalHealth

September is National Suicide Awareness Month, and today (Sept 10th) is World Suicide Prevention Day. "Suicide is a major public health challenge, with more than 700 000 deaths each year globally. Each suicide has far-reaching social, emotional, and economic consequences, and deeply affects individuals and communities worldwide. The triennial theme for World Suicide Prevention Day for 2024-2026 is "Changing the Narrative on Suicide" with the call to action "Start the Conversation". This theme aims to raise awareness about the importance of reducing stigma and encouraging open conversations to prevent suicides. Changing the narrative on suicide is about transforming how we perceive this complex issue and shifting from a culture of silence and stigma to one of openness, understanding, and support." September is National Suicide Prevention Month, a time set aside to raise awareness of this public health issue that we have historically whispered about or avoided discussing at all. It is an opportunity to educate those who are unaware about the impact of suicide, and re-educate those who learned from inaccurate or misinformed sources. It is a call to learn the facts about suicide and it’s devastating impact on our communities, and unlearn the myths and hurtful lies about those impacted by suicide. It is a call to action, to shift public perception and spread hope. It is a time of sharing resources and stories of strength and perseverance. It is a time focused on ensuring that individuals, friends, and families have access to the resources they need in order to discuss suicide prevention, to seek help, and to heal. It is a time dedicated to ensuring that no one should suffer in silence, and that those who are contemplating suicide will be here tomorrow, and every day after that. #StopSuicide #SuicidePreventionAwarenessMonth American Foundation for Suicide Prevention National Association of Social Workers North Carolina Chapter National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention

Today is #WorldSuicidePreventionDay—a day to remember how important it is to have the conversations that matter. As a leading cause of death in the US, suicide affects people of all ages and across all walks of life. Unfortunately, most of those suffering from suicidal thoughts stay silent due to feelings of shame, worry about being a burden, or fear of being rejected or not supported. Started in 2003 by the International Association for Suicide Prevention in conjunction with the World Health Organization (WHO), the theme for this year’s observance is “Changing the Narrative”. This is a call to action for all of us to work toward ending the stigma of discussing suicide. For lawmakers, changing the narrative looks like passing laws that improve access to mental health support and care. For employers, it looks like creating a culture of open dialogue about mental health and creating policies that encourage self-care for employees. For family members and friends, it can mean not shying away from asking how someone is feeling. No action is too small or insignificant if it means saving lives. Each step brings us closer to transforming how the topic of suicide is perceived so the stigma around it is eradicated. No one should face their struggles alone. Today, let’s be ok with talking openly so we can ask for and provide help when it matters most. The more we work together to change the conversation around suicide, the more we make a difference.
