The first Baylor MarComm Professional Development Day was a great way to spend a Tuesday in Waco. Here’s what I learned about social media, marketing and branding: 1️⃣ No institution brand message can overcome a poor brand experience: 52% of brands experience a lift and brand commitment after a meaningful experience with a customer. The experience means a lot, so invest and spend time crafting a memorable time when someone is on campus. 2️⃣ The highest social media engagement is in higher ed: between demographic, segmentation, visual dominance, and community building seen on a school platform, it’s a lay-up for schools to engage and build brand equity with the current population or alumni. 3️⃣ Perception is half the battle in selling a city to a potential student or staff member: when there is a lack of familiarity of a city, that can deter potential students and staff members. Educating your current staff and faculty, as well as providing helpful resources and information during the recruitment process can make all the difference. Special thank you to the MarComm staff for also allowing me to present on our three biggest social media moments in the spring: Brittney Griner’s jersey retirement, Coach Scott Drew and his decision to stay, and our March Madness “dub” graphics.
