Taking a moment to appreciate the incredible individuals I've had the pleasure of working with at Valencia College. I owe a great deal to their guidance, as it has been critical in navigating my academic and professional pursuits. Danny M. Hoey, Jr., Ph.D., one of our Provosts, once messaged me a simple 'What's going on?' I found myself overthinking my reply, treating it as if it were a critical assignment. When we met the next day, he playfully noted that my response was too formal, reminding me to always be my genuine self. This small exchange taught me that authenticity is valued, even—and especially—with our leaders. Joshua Austin, the Director of Student Development, is someone I deeply respect and admire. Our interactions are always filled with laughter, yet he consistently challenges me to set my sights higher, inspiring me to reach for levels beyond what I thought possible. His mantra of continuous personal development, even amidst his hectic schedule, motivates our team to push the boundaries of our own ideas. A memorable trip to Tallahassee with Dr. Andel Fils-Aime led to an enriching one-hour conversation that has left a lasting impact on me. Discussing strategies around academic pursuits, career planning, and personal life decisions provided me with a blueprint for navigating complex life stages. These conversations with leaders at Valencia have been invaluable. They've not only imparted wisdom but have also shown me the importance of human connection in our professional lives. The lesson here? Engage openly with your superiors. I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel - Maya Angelou There are many reasons why I enjoy teaching and mentoring junior colleagues. At the core is the desire to impact healthcare by expanding the band of well trained healthcare professionals within my circle of influence. I literally feel honored each time I have an opportunity to pass knowledge and skill sets to the students I come across in the course of my work schedule. Another reason I enjoy teaching + mentoring is the realization that beyond simply making students knowledgeable, there is deeper sense of wholeness that develops within these students each time they learn or are directly involved in something new. This sense is even more each time THEY PERFORM A SKILL that seems above their level. Last week during a round, I turned to Glory Fuwa, one of the very bright Y5 students rotating through the ED presently and said to her "You will do this procedure under supervision". I understood the sense disbelief and anxiety in her eyes. This was a procedure even interns would skip a heartbeat about. A few days after the procedure (which was supervised by franklin otugeme), I asked her how she felt. She answered: "I was Initially worried but I felt great afterwards". As a team team, moments like this make me truly glad and satisfied about my work when I leave the ED floor each day. I am therefore very INTENTIONAL and DELIBERATE about creating these moments for people I work with. Well done Glory Fuwa! "Be a part of as many clubs and societies as possible" ~Was what every senior in college told me to do and I blindly followed them:) So after actively participating in the different club activites in the 1st year, I joined the core team of 3 technical clubs and one cultural club! It did provide me greater opportunities to connect and grow, however, the challenges it brought along made me question my decision. ❗Despite my best efforts, I could never manage enough time for each club. ❗Although I completed my work before deadlines and ensured smooth functioning of events, I still felt dissatisfied. ❗My mind was always rushing and in a state of dilemma. ❗Sometimes my efforts and contributions were questioned, despite my intention to do my best for every club. Nevertheless, I am more than grateful for collaboration of all those who supported me in this roller coaster journey. The formalised role of the education-focused academic (aka teaching-focused, with performance expectations for 1. teaching excellence, 2. educational leadership, and 3. education scholarship/research) make massive contributions to a core element of universities. Dr Niki Macionis and I, representing the team (see below), presented the first phase of our project investigating education-focused academics’ experience - at the CAUTHE Australasian Tourism and Hospitality Education conference. Reviewing the literature, we discovered, while there are some very positive experiences, many face challenges in the contest between achieving their performance expectations and the resources and support enabling them to do so. We are now starting the second phase, investigating the lived experience of education-focused academics in business schools. Throughout my undergraduate years at the University of Delaware, I was involved in the Blue Hen Leadership Program which is a tiered program that spans all four undergrad years. During the second tier of the program, we were tasked in working with an organization on a project they wanted to implement. My group worked with the organization Friendship House, and we helped them to expand their student uniform initiative which provides school uniforms to families in need at title 1 schools in the area. While working on the project my group was able to research new schools for them to partner with, created flyers for their uniform drive, and put on an event for volunteers to come in and help them organize the uniform items collected. Through this experience I was able to develop effective skills in communication as well as event planning. As a group we were able to develop trust in one another and as a result created strong friendships. This allowed us to be able to communicate more effectively and work through any conflicts. We were also able to create and put on a volunteer event which gave me a better understanding of what goes into an event like that, and what is the best way to market it so people would want to attend.  During this tier we also learned about strengths and shadows which is a concept that describes how with your strengths there is a corresponding shadow that reveals itself if you are not able to use your strength fully. For instance, a strength that I have is the guardian which means that I am a responsible and disciplined person and like to ensure that everything is well managed and taken care of. If I am not able to portray that strength in a group setting, for example, then the corresponding shadow of the worrier will come out. This means that I may fear for the worse in some situations where I may not have a lot of control over, or if many things seem to go wrong. This was an interesting concept to learn about and allowed me to understand myself better and why I may react in a certain way in different situations.  Overall in this tier of BHLP, I was able to take what I learned in the first tier and put it into practice through the project I completed with Friendship House. I was able to fully grasp what went into working effectively in a group, and what goes into building trust with group members. This is a very important skill to have, as being able to work with others and get along with them is a common occurrence in everyday life. Finally, this tier led me to learn more about myself and reflect on how I would normally act in certain situations. Learning the strengths and shadows approach was really eye opening and allowed me to be more mindful about how I respond in situations.

Last week, we had the privilege of hosting two of University Canada West's most accomplished alumni, Elva Fisher and Ario Heshmatzadeh 🇨🇦 at my #UCWWORK490 Capstone class for our #BeyondTheClassroom series. Elva and Ario shared valuable stories and insights which inspired our students with engaging questions as they explore their career opportunities. Both were extremely generous with their time (at a late hour) and beyond candid with their answers. There were lots of takeaways to reflect on. While you may have heard some of these before, Elva and Ario brought them to life with personal stories and actionable advice, which our students could relate to: 💡The Importance of Self-Awareness💡: To be honest, this is an area I started becoming more "aware" of recently / after kids. It's amazing how much being a parent can help you learn about yourself (and test your patience 😂 ). Elva quoted best-selling author Tasha Eurich who defines self-awareness as "the ability to see ourselves clearly, to understand who we are, how others see us, and how we fit in the world". It's a journey for sure! 💡Learn to Resolve Conflict from a Young Age💡: I tell my students that conflict is part of life. We can't avoid it but we can learn healthy ways to manage it. Elva shared some strategies to overcome group conflict including scheduling, collaboration, and my favorite, setting clear expectations. Now, conflict about toys between my two little ones is another story😊 💡 Research, Connect & Reflect💡Ario encouraged students to research the organization(s) one may be interested in (how are they treating customers; reviews, social engagement etc.) and start connecting on LinkedIn with those who may work there (e.g. what's the culture like?). Also, asking ourselves: "Are our values aligned with those of the organization?" 💡 Do you Wish you had a Different Boss?💡 According to Ario (and he doesn't wish this on anyone), this may be the BEST thing that happens to you. Why? It will help you appreciate the good bosses you will have down the road and help to develop you into a leader you wish you had. 💡Be Specific💡How can you stand out from the thousands of students who graduate each year with the same degree? Your personal brand, network, and unique skillset. How can your unique skills benefit the organization? Anyone can "say" they have those skills. Therefore, you must be very specific and back up your claims (e.g. school projects, portfolio, social proof etc.) 💡Job Search can be Taxing. You are NOT Alone💡As Elva mentioned and while easier said than done, it's important NOT to take rejection emails personally. Every person's perception of intelligence is unique, but we can all agree that it's not fixed. It can grow, change and expand. To achieve this, one must make intentional efforts towards personal growth and improvement. Here are four steps you can take, no matter your profession, economic level, academic level or career stage, to increase your intelligence over the next six months: 1. Set clear goals: Write down what you want to achieve and set achievable goals for yourself. This will help you stay focused and monitor your progress. 2. Learn new skills: Take up a new hobby or enroll in a course to challenge yourself. Learning new skills not only expands your knowledge but also helps to keep your brain active and engaged. 3. Read widely: Reading is an excellent way to expose yourself to new ideas and perspectives. It also helps to improve your cognitive abilities and vocabulary. 4. Practice mindfulness: Mindfulness practices like 2024 meditation and not the 70’s meditation that helps to improve focus and reduce stress. This can help you stay motivated and focused on your goals. Remember, intelligence is not fixed, and with intentional effort, you can expand your knowledge and abilities.
