Saturday, Sept 23 was the Child + Youth Family Justice Conference co-hosted by Access to Justice BC, the Representative for Children & Youth, Youth Voices (Family Justice Innovation Lab) and the Society for Children and Youth BC. I felt lucky enough to attend online and was hugely impacted by the stories, experiences, and knowledge of the youth who spoke on the panels throughout the day. The focus was on the voices and perspectives of youth and children as they relate to their own circumstances with the family justice system. The questions for the panel centered on how to improve the system. There were many takeaways from this conference including access to trained, child-centered professionals, among others. What stuck with me was the importance youth speakers placed on having a person who connected and listened to them. They needed someone who stuck with them through their situation(s) so they had continuity with each person. Working with people who understood the complex circumstances of their lives and the importance of confidentiality to keep them safe so they could share their experiences were essential to building trust. Without these three factors - connection, continuity, and confidentiality - youth could not build trust and feel heard by those working within the system.
