April is #FairHousingMonth and we're highlighting some of the challenges our clients face in pursuing protection of their rights under the #FairHousingAct. Read Malik's story below*:
Malik, an Army veteran who bravely served his country, faced a new battle upon returning home: finding housing that allowed his service dog, a vital companion trained to support him with his post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Despite the clear provisions of the Fair Housing Act, Malik encountered multiple landlords who refused to allow reasonable modifications for his service animal, citing no-pet policies.
Having seen SCLS resources on protections for service animals under the Fair Housing Act, Malik sought assistance from SCLS, which helped him navigate the legal process. With their support, Malik filed a complaint against the landlords, asserting his rights under the Fair Housing Act. As a result, Malik not only secured housing that welcomed his service dog but also raised awareness about the importance of accommodating service animals for veterans and individuals with disabilities.
