Back in December, Utah Gov. Spencer Cox announced that the state is trying to remove bachelor’s degree requirements—a major barrier standing between job applicants and government positions. It’s an impressive and long-overdue step forward. Here’s what it means: → Out of the 1,080 jobs in Utah's executive branch, 1,058 positions will no longer require a degree → Hiring managers will now assess relevant experience alongside educational qualifications, ensuring a fair evaluation process That means more opportunities for: → People seeking apprenticeships and other on-the-job training → Rural candidates → Those returning to work after an extended absence through the state’s Returnship program It’s a brilliant and progressive step forward. We hope to see other states make similar moves. https://buff.ly/3O8fzEY

One of the difficulties of living and working in the Rust Belt is the perception of who we are. Most people from outside our area assume that Cleveland and Cuyahoga County are dominated by health care for an aging population, manufacturing processes stuck in the 1980s, and crumbling infrastructure. Instead, we are striving to build a foundation for the next generation that includes clean and sustainable industries, proactive health care concerned as much about keeping patients healthy as it is curing them, and a trade union-based approach to revitalizing our infrastructure that emphasizes new technologies. From a workforce development perspective, that means that while we seek immediate work for our participants, we also ask them to keep their eyes down the road. We help them build career pathways that are dynamic, flexible, and individualized, designing a road for their futures that helps them find careers that enable them to show their skills while feeling valued and appreciated. It’s a big task, and it’s accomplished through micro-credentials and apprenticeships as much as it is traditional jobs associated with northeast Ohio. We believe that the individuals we work with every day are up to the task.

While 90% of jobs in Alabama require some form of post-secondary credential, only 46% of the population holds one. And of every 100 high school graduates, only 24 attain a bachelor's degree within six years. What about the rest? That's where Alabama steps in, shifting the focus from traditional degrees to apprenticeships, occupational licenses, certifications, and more. This isn't about downplaying degrees but about elevating every form of learning that equips our workforce for in-demand jobs. But it doesn't stop there. Alabama’s approach involves organized sectoral partnerships, encompassing business, industry, and education leaders. The Alabama Committee on Credentialing and Career Pathways, co-chaired by key educational figures, is a testament to this collaborative effort. This committee is creating a 'DNA' for in-demand jobs – a blend of required competencies, qualifications, and the essence of what each job entails. They’re crafting a workforce adaptable across various sectors, not just climbing a traditional ladder but navigating a dynamic career landscape. Alabama isn't just preparing for the future of work; it's actively constructing it. A future where skills, adaptability, and lifelong learning are the currency of the job market. #AlTalentTriad #AlabamaWorks #EBSCOed #Skills #FutureOfWork
