I had a call earlier this week with another CEO - no real purpose to it - just to get to know each other and swap war stories. As I'm gabbing on about what we do, he stops me to ask, "Why do you give it all away for free, Mark?" Of course, forever humble, I chuckled back and said "Because I'm the worst businessman ever!" Obviously, I'm joking...😂 🚀 Here's the real insight: I believe in building a community where everyone has the tools to succeed. Think of me as your friendly neighbourhood Spiderman, protecting my community in the best way I know how - handing out nuggets of wisdom like they’re candy. 🔍 Value for All: By sharing knowledge freely, we all rise together. Sure, I could charge for every little tidbit (and retire early to an island made of contractor contracts), but where’s the fun in that? I often get asked for advise on how to get events rolling, so I thought I'd do regular breakdown posts here. The question I get the most is: How do I get started? But they really mean: "How do I make people show up?" Unless you have a proper following, and you get a bit lucky, getting any event or community started implies a lot of manual work: 📧 Send out emails 📞 Pick up the phone 👍 Make people commit Breaking through the noise is hard, and posting a cool flyer online won't just get you people in a room. You are going to have to work for it. I know what you are thinking: its a bit cringe to ask people personally to come to something. But don't reach out to just anyone, truly make a list of people that you KNOW will benefit from what you are starting, and be a bit pushy. The real success of an event is not how many people show up but how many people return for the next one. You can grow from there.

With so many options in the market, customers have great power in who they choose and they don’t want to just be sold to. Community building is a form of consistent marketing that engages your audience and reduces your dependency on reactive marketing which likely won't produce the results you're after. It's not what you do, but how you display it makes the difference You can be the best at what you do But do you really get what you deserve? You see people less experienced than you make more than you But how? The secret sauce? They never miss a chance to share what they know Share your knowledge online  - Solve people's problems for free - Show them you can help them better Do free webinars - Open yourself up to new experiences - You get to meet a lot of new people Help beginners in your niche - Share a genuine suggestion  - Help them reach their next phase Participate in community events  - Volunteer to introduce yourself  - Actively participate in group activities Build your personal brand - Keep sharing what you know - Eventually you'll be known for what you do Enough of speaking with those 4 friends close to your cabin Scale yourself up to larger audience Unless you speak, you'll never attract your opportunities You don't need more to share Share what you know and you keep adding more to it Make yourself visible & valuable! Ummm here’s a big secret!!!! …A lot of course and classes for speakers talk about how to speak and how to write a great talk, but fail to mention the steps you can take before the event, during the event, and after the event to connect with a new audience, secure more paid engagements and build a sustainable stream of income from speaking. Ask yourself this…. - who are you going to connect with from that computer in your hand when you’re back in your room at the end of the event or in the Uber on your way to networking? - how are you interacting with the audience/organizers before the event? - what opportunities are you creating during the event for engagement with you?
