The #mining industry is falling behind. Recent data suggests that producers are unable to meet the demand for minerals critical for the energy transition. Can you bridge the widening gap while meeting your #sustainability goals? There is a path to achieving that balance. In his latest article, Eric Lambregts discusses how: https://lnkd.in/eiedEVAV #SupplyChainOptimization #IntegratedPlanning #NetZero

Innovation in Critical Mineral Sourcing: Time to Think Creatively. As traditional mining struggles to keep pace with rising demand for critical minerals, Carly Leonida teams up with Greg Gillian and Kevin Kammerzell from Stantec to explore alternative approaches. With technologies like direct lithium extraction (DLE), the industry can unlock new sources of metals and bridge the gap between supply and demand. From tapping lithium brines to reprocessing tailings, these innovative methods offer opportunities to enhance sustainability and efficiency in the mining sector. The future of sourcing critical minerals lies in thinking outside the box. https://lnkd.in/ge7DQAXP #theintelligentminer #mining #criticalminerals #directlithiumextraction #innovation #sustainability #cleantech #metalsindustry

From the AusIMM Bulletin: The demand for critical minerals to support global decarbonisation is growing rapidly, and mining companies need to step up their production of lithium, nickel, and cobalt. Garrett Kramer and Paul ABONGWA, P. Geo. from GEOVIA Dassault Systèmes explore how technological cooperation along the supply chain is crucial to meet this demand. https://lnkd.in/gHEFYJyA

Without the critical minerals that mining companies produce, the transition will not happen. As such, it’s essential that long-term, responsible investors, such as LGIM, support these companies as they decarbonise. In order for us to do so, they must meet our minimum expectations, included within our updated assessment framework. Companies that put transition plans to a vote which do not meet our expectations will not receive our support. Read our updated approach to assessing mining company transition plans here:

Launched in February, the GRI Sector Standard for #Mining (#GRI14) provides a helping hand to companies in meeting widespread disclosure and #duediligence needs, all the while allowing stakeholders to fully understand impacts, make comparisons across commodities and companies, and track progress over time. In particular, GRI 14 enables complete, consistent, and detailed reporting by: ✅ Focusing on the most significant impacts, thereby helping companies determine material topics from a #sustainabledevelopment perspective ✅ Identifying relevant disclosures to report on impacts, reflecting the major concerns of stakeholders ✅ Indicating mine-site-level reporting expectations for locally significant impacts Mark Robinson, Executive Director at EITI (Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative), said: “The energy transition brings risks and opportunities for the mining sector in equal measure. Without transparency, the sector will lack the means to respond to a changing landscape in a way that enables citizens to benefit fully from their resources. The EITI welcomes the GRI’s revised Mining Sector Standard and encourages EITI implementing countries and other stakeholders to draw on company disclosures to use it to streamline their own reporting and identify opportunities for data use.” Find out more details about the Standard & download it today here 👉 https://ow.ly/own550QPqt9 #GRIStandards #sustainabilityreporting

DCAF welcomes the launch of the Global Reporting Initiative Mining Sector Standard! For the first time, the #GRI prominently centers disclosures on conflict prevention, responsible security and #humanrights enabling mining companies to meet their #sustainability reporting obligations and monitor their impacts on local populations when they operate in conflict affected and high-risk areas. Interesting read in World Economic Forum about how the mining industry must be ambitious in its support of the net zero transition. "The mining sector, in particular, deserves its new-found spotlight in the context of the global energy transition. Forecasts show that mining companies need to go above and beyond what has been expected of them if the world is to win the race to a net-zero economy." My latest for APM Research Lab: How sustainable is lithium mining for electric vehicles? With the U.S. aiming to shift lithium production from import-based to local, I took a look at what that can mean for geopolitics, the environment and the EV industry as a whole.
NEW! Mining for lithium, used in electric vehicle batteries, has significant environmental impacts. However, consumer demand & supply chain issues are leading toward US expansion by our Ten Across data journalism fellow, Rithwik Kalale https://lnkd.in/gSuEAJnJ

SPONSORED POST: Making Real Progress in minerals processing Mining companies are facing rising exploration costs, volatile market prices for hard-rock metals, and increasingly deeper mining, low-grade ores and remote environments. Productivity remains alongside safety as one of the highest priorities – but sustainability is their equal. Mining and its supply chain is on a journey to do more with less; double, triple and quadruple the volumes of metals and minerals extracted from ore while eventually eliminating fossil fuels and reducing energy and water resources. Technology leadership and development is needed. Solutions that tackle these issues need to ensure equipment operates efficiently and reliably, with minimal intervention from the operators. This article will explore the opportunities and the hurdles towards making real progress in sustainability through technology and expertise. It will take a look at the key technology in ABB’s arsenal, the Gearless Mill Drive (GMD), and its critical role in literally driving mineral processing operations towards a more sustainable future. Find out more in this profile below... #gearlessmilldrives #comminution #sustainablemining #mineralprocessing #RealProgress
