⚡️Here is a bitter truth of what has been happening for the past months. ⚡️ Just 4% of Netflix originals programs are big hits! Essentially only a few shows would be eligible for performance bonuses under the new contract between WGA and Major studios! A HANDFUL OF PROJECT, that’s it! Yes, many shows are produced every year and we are lucky to be part of the creative process, however few shows go break even (no loss occurred), many don’t see a dime at all. Meaning only few shows make money and for every Friends, there are 20 shows that will be cancelled well before they made it into syndication, therefore they will not make any money. The data shows clearly how rare big hits are on streaming platforms! SAG is asking even more and it’s clearly for those rare successful shows! An interesting piece on the current battle for #Paramount. The best option for whoever takes over Paramount is to follow the #Sony strategy and become the "arms dealer" who monetises its content to the max, whether by selling to the highest bidder and / or monetising in ways such as premium short-form video. The idea Paramount can compete effectively with the other major streaming services is an illusion, not least because it does not have the balance sheet / cash resources. One other point which this piece touches on indirectly The Wall Street consensus is overestimating #Netflix's strengths given (1) its cash flow generation is minor compared with its peers; (2) it does not have an historical bank of content and (3) the ending of regular disclosure on subscriber numbers points to growing issues. Disney+, Hulu, and Max Are Bundling Their Streaming Platforms https://ift.tt/hlX54Zm The great consolidation of the industry continues as Warner Bros, in a bif to make money, will now attach Max to Disney and Hulu, creating another bundle that feels exactly like cable. The combined content will allow purchasers to watch ABC, CNN, DC, Discovery, Disney, Food Network, FX, HBO, HGTV, Hulu, Marvel, Pixar, Searchlight, and Warner Bros in ad-supported or ad-free plans. The Disney and Hulu merger of last year helped both companies, with subscriptions rising. Adding Max will give more options of r adults on the platform, and allow them to have access to both Marvel and DC Superheroes on the platform. There's also the idea of live sports, which Hulu already had, and Max shows through a TNT partnership. The move makes a ton of sense for Warner, who is trying to make as much cash as possible, as rumors swirl Zaslav could be selling the studio. Warner Bros. Discovery has taken the Cartoon Network website offline, redirecting visitors to Max, its subscription-based streaming service. This move, which occurred on August 8, 2024, invites users to sign up for Max to continue watching their favorite Cartoon Network shows. The new Max landing page also features a Kids Profile with ratings restrictions and privacy protections, while Cartoon Network programming will still be available on TV and connected apps. The shutdown of cartoonnetwork.com reflects Warner Bros. Discovery’s shift in focus towards platforms with higher engagement and growth potential. The network will continue to offer 11 hours of programming daily on linear TV, but previously available content, including full episodes and free games, is now exclusively accessible via Max. This decision follows Warner Bros. Discovery’s announcement to phase out the Boomerang streaming service by September 30, migrating content to Max. The move aligns with broader cost-cutting efforts and comes amidst a challenging financial period for the company, which recently reported a Q2 revenue decrease and a significant net loss. Really looking forward to this one. The sector has seen exponential growth in recent years - mainly based on volume of channel activity coming from the US. But the conversation is becoming more refined, with measurements of quality of content over quantity… Interested to see how this excellent line up of experts think this will shape 2024.

Is it Taboo to Stretch a Screen? Anyone else get majorly bugged by letterboxing (those pesky black bars) on streaming services? Sometimes it gets so bad, I'm tempted to jump through hoops and find alternate means to use the "fill to screen". Seriously, why can't streaming apps like Amazon Prime, Disney+, or Max let us adjust the aspect ratio? This goes for Paramount+, Starz, and MGM+ too. On the other hand, basic third-party players like VLC, MX Player, Just Player, Night Player, Stremio, and Kodi all offer options like "Fill," "Fit to Screen," or "Stretch." TVs "allow" it, but it's a lackluster solution, usually just a partial or full zoom. YouTube does work with VLC using "Open Network Stream," but it's not the smoothest experience. I am a big fan of stretch, fit screen, and fill (But Not Zoom That Crops!): Stretching feels more immersive, and honestly, who wants black bars eating up screen space? Are most people purists where it's believed stretching the image is disrespectful to the director's vision, as it alters the intended aspect ratio.
