Bringing [Dis]Ability to the Bar’s Bar Scholarship Event It was lovely to be a panellist on this evenings event ran by the amazing Konstantina Nouka. It is always very exciting to sit on a panel alongside individuals that you have admired, and been inspired by, from afar through following their social media! A summary of our advice for Bar scholarship applications: 1. Choosing an Inn can feel like a huge decision - have a read about the different societies they have, the interview format, the qualifying sessions they run and the sort of food that they have! 2. Make your answers as concise as possible. 3. Read the criteria and link it to your skills and experience. 4. Explain your mitigating circumstances. 5. Sell your non-legal work experience. Consider whether a non-legal example better exemplifies the skill that you are trying to show. 6. When answering why this area of law, demonstrate that you understand the area, you have experienced the area and why you like it and feel your skills are suited towards it. 7. When answering why the Bar, try to signpost and give a few examples. 8. Use STAR to answer the questions. 9. Attend court and sit in the public gallery to gain experience of a court environment. 10. Apply! It is worth a go. I am a huge fan of my Inn, The Honourable Society of Lincoln's Inn, in particular the beautiful library and grounds, but other inns are available! #barrister #scholarships #law

Financial barriers, as well as access to resources and connections, continue to be some of the key challenges faced by those who aspire to pursue a career in law. Extremely disappointed by the recent incident our team has encountered in the “National Moot Court Competition.” Giving the precise background, to hone their advocacy and research skills through moot court competitions, the teams (particularly outstation teams) pay their own mounting expenses of traveling, accommodation, and food only in hope of meritorious experience and learning. Please note that we understand minor negligence that may happen at the end of the organizers; however, when the bias is as apparent as daylight, the passion of sincere participants dies. Cutting it short, we recently participated in a National Moot Court competition (I wouldn’t like to NAME and SHAME, but please if you are reading it and know you have done something similar, please take it seriously), where several teams from a single college participated, making the competition more of an intra than a national one. The apparent policies of the organization leading to the death of merit were: -1 The number of judges in preliminary rounds was different for the round of each team. Some slots comprised two judges, some three, and in some rounds, four judges constituted the bench. (This means one team is judged on the score of 200, the other is judged on the score of 300 and 400 respectively). Ridiculous. -2 Secondly, the judges were giving marks by using pencils. (We can understand any underlying policy behind it; however, this was an apparent flaw raising questions on whether the organization had the intent to change results.) -3 The judges had no idea of what the moot problem is and what the moot culture actually aims to teach. They were more concerned with teaching participants how “HIGH COURT WORKS.” -4 The organizers did not have any idea as to before which authority the counsel are pleading. Their wrong approach in announcing the court name was sufficient to confuse judges regarding the jurisdiction. -5 Lastly and most importantly, without apparent merit and policies, sending most teams from a single college to the advance rounds (WITHOUT ANY JUSTIFICATION), making it again more like an intra of one college than one national competition. National organizers, PLEASE note that if you are undertaking a responsibility for anyone’s professional development and that at the participant’s own expense, please be careful of what policies you are adopting in the name of merit. Merit shouldn’t be claimed only. It should be practiced in letter and spirit. #NationalMootCourt #SupportMerit

Throughout my law degree, I have found considering the bigger picture to be vital to me. A theme I believe will follow on through my career, as considering how the opportunities and challenges facing the world will always be important to the legal field. In today’s webinar with Hill Dickinson, we heard from legal sectors such as: banking & finance, marine & global trade, and healthcare on how factors such as artificial intelligence, geopolitics, inflation and interest rates impact their sectors and how they advise clients to optimise this. I also managed to note down a lot of key advice in starting and progressing my legal career that I will be able to take advantage of.
