U Capital publishes the latest Oman Banking Statistics Report – February 2024. SOME THINKING POINTS ON ISLAMIC BANKING The year was 1985 and Kuwait Finance House had received the #Euromoney award of the year. In an environment where everyone was looking for the operational meaning of Islamic Banking my boss Hamid Bank of #citibank got me to find that article of Euromoney where the working of KFH had been discussed. The basic principle of #islamicbanking is to curb or eliminate exploitation in the society. People should not be making money because they have money but rather should be involved in some productive activity to create wealth. If we talk about the financing of a project where a share of the projected profits is allocated to the financing institution then it doesnt sound so complicated. Even for this we would need major regulatory and legal changes. However in the case of consumer finance it becomes rather complicated. If a person were to ask for a loan for health reasons, then there is no way a commercial financial institution can take care of his need. The #state will have to step in. In case he wants to upgrade his vehicle then by a lenient view prime loans would qualify and #subprime wouldn't. Because in the case of subprime there is an element of exploitation and of course the health of the lending institution is also being exposed to undue risks. Now we come to the part where the #depositor is being promised a share in the profit of the institution. This is even more tricky. The bank has a certain #equity of its own and then the depositors (if they are to be given a fare share of the profits) turn into equity holders as such. We start on the wrong foot in a banking system where there is a loosely knit cartel under the auspices of the #centralbanks . Hence some other model of a financing institution will have to be looked at. I am no expert but I am just trying to highlight some of the points that need to be taken care off before we embark on the journey of creating institutions which are #shariah compliant

Qatar’s banking sector witnessed exponential growth of 6.3% in commercial bank deposits, which registered QAR1.024 trillion ($276.7 billion) in April, according to the latest National Planning Council - Qatar data. Qatar’s public sector deposits in commercial banks reached QAR372.9 billion in April, up 0.9% monthly and 11.7% annually. Meanwhile, private sector deposits in Qatar’s commercial banks saw a 4% annual increase to QAR467.1 billion but declined 0.9% compared to March.
