Though many look at art as a practice, I see it as a vital skill. It's one of the most important ways I navigate the world. Art has strengthened every critical skill I've needed to move through life. It has helped me build in all areas from problem solving and introspection, to self starting as well as team building and more. It has opened up my mind to see there is so much more in the world than what I see in my everyday life. It's put me in someone else's shoes to see the world from where they stand. The arguments of STEM vs STEAM have never made sense to me because art is the catalyst that brings all ideas, perception and perspectives together. Everyone could benefit from the non-traditional methods art can bring to the table.
Last week, Dean Phylicia Rashad and Dean Sandra Crewe held an exclusive conversation about the intersection between social work and fine arts. Dean Crewe emphasized the importance of using non-traditional methods to reach out to disenfranchised communities. Dance, fashion, theater, etc. can be used to relate to disenfranchised people and understand their needs and perspectives. Through art “We are expressing our understanding of ourselves, of life, the people around us, and the world we would like to see,” said Rashad.

On this episode of Arts Engines, Aaron Dworkin speaks with Donna Collins, Executive Director of the Ohio Arts Council and Chair of the Board of Directors of the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies (NASAA), who reflects on arts advocacy and its profound impact on communities. 🔍 Donna prompts us to question the efficacy of existing formulas and emphasizes the need for meaningful engagement with communities that have been marginalized. Additionally, she highlights the importance of listening to successful practitioners, organizations, and the communities they serve. 💡 Donna champions collaboration as the cornerstone of effective leadership, stressing the power of growing our support networks to navigate challenges and celebrate victories together. 🌟 It's crucial to recognize that advocating for the arts isn't a binary choice, a symptom of White Supremacy Culture, but an essential aspect of our shared humanity. Donna emphasizes the value of cross-sector collaboration, from Arts and Health to Arts and Housing, to foster resilience and unity. ⏳ In challenging times, Donna introduces the "80-10-10" rule, focusing 80% on the mission, 10% on community engagement, and 10% on professional development—a balanced approach for navigating uncertainty while staying true to our goals. However, what would it look like if we gave more effort to our communities and ourselves? #Arts #Culture #ArtsCouncil #Board #Agency #Advocacy #Community #Policy #Ohio #ProfessionalDevelopment #Human #Collaboration

**NEW REPORT** The National Assembly of State Arts Agencies (NASAA) serves on the Grantmakers in the Arts board and is introducing this report that is the culmination of more than 18 months of dialogue with Indigenous artists, elders, culture bearers, tribal liaisons, leaders of Native organizations, and individuals working inside the tribal relations offices of U.S. state and federal government agencies. All artists face challenges, but Indigenous artists face extra hurdles from the effects of fraud and cultural appropriation. Support to Native organizations and artists represents only about 0.4% of state arts agency grant funding, and many tribes are not aware that state arts agencies even exist.
